Hong Kong: On March 23, 2026, the Hong Kong government changed the implementing rules relating to the National Security Law. It is now a criminal offense to refuse to give the Hong Kong police the passwords or decryption assistance to access all personal electronic devices including cellphones and laptops. This legal change applies to everyone, including U.S. citizens, in Hong Kong, arriving or just transiting Hong Kong International Airport. In addition, the Hong Kong government also has more authority to take and keep any personal devices, as evidence, that they claim are linked to national security offenses. 👏👏 @WSJopinion for picking up the ongoing U.K. #HongKong Economic and Trade Office spy trial, in which British prosecutors say the #London #HKETO paid more than $127,500 to have bountied #HongKongers like our colleague @Chloe_chc_25 and others followed. There are 14 HKETOs outside mainland #China and none of them deserve the diplomatic privileges they enjoy, because #HK is no longer autonomous from the mainland. In the U.S., #HKETOs remain open for business — surveillance and intimidation of the Hong Kong community — in #NewYork, #SanFrancisco and #WashingtonDC. "A bipartisan bill in Congress — the HKETO Certification Act — would give the Secretary of State authority to shut the U.S. HKETOs down, and this British case is another reason to pass it." wsj.com/opinion/hong-k…

#HKETOSpyScandal The prosecution's opened its case in the trial of HKETO employee Bill Yuen (L) & Peter Wai (R) who acted as HK gov't "shadow police" in the UK, acting on from people w/ links to HK police & authorities re activists targeted w/ bounties. aol.com/news/pair-accu…

The #HKETOSpyScandal in the UK is the clearest evidence yet of the HK gov't's use of HKETOs to carry out surveillance & #TransnationalRepression of #HongKongers abroad. In the US, we call on Congress to pass the #HKETOCertificationAct & say #NoToHKETO. x.com/hkdc_us/status…

The U.S. condemns the Hong Kong court's sentencing of Kwok Yin-Sang, father of U.S.-based activist Anna Kwok, and calls for his immediate release. The targeting of individuals who advocate for basic freedoms in Hong Kong and their families is unacceptable.
