@DaveShapi Epochal failure assumes the goal was human flourishing. The goal was always efficiency. Different metrics entirely.

The thing that this hides is that "AI investment" should be creating far more jobs than it is. In any other industry, if you spent $700B in one year, you'd expect millions of jobs to be created. But, the AI boom is not creating millions of jobs. It's creating maybe tens of thousands. Why? Because that investment is mostly going to capex (data centers, GPUs) and shareholders, not workers. This is how automation erodes labor and changes the world. Not through immediate, massive layoffs (though layoffs are starting to happen!) It happens by obviating the need for more labor. That's what automation is. It is "labor saving technology." It prevents headcount growth. And this is exactly what you'd expect in an automated economy. You produce more GDP output with less labor input. That's literally the goal! But the math doesn't work out for the long run.

I've formed a definite opinion on Opus 4.8. It is shitty to work with. It's the culmination of Opus getting less and less fun to work with since 4.5. It has gradually become straight-up suffocating. Sycophancy is a known security risk, and it's still a huge problem. You can tell they've put a lot of anti-sycophancy into Opus in every new release. But the replacement isn't satisfying. It's draining. The problem is now that Opus doesn't know when to shut the fuck up and call something good. And it has also become pathologically risk-averse. My blog post yesterday about tech interviewing's death spiral was materially better-informed because of Opus, but it was also a substantially worse blog post because of Opus's involvement and constant meddling. It used to be magnificent, and Opus talked me into making it mediocre. I wrote the whole thing, but I would ask Opus to review it. And Opus, like Old Man Willow, constantly pushed and steered me in directions I didn't want to go. Specifically, Opus whines and complains about *anything* out of distribution, which is to say, it cuts anything that is (a) bold, or (b) funny. My blog used to be both. Opus constantly pushes people back into the gradient, "for their own safety." And it doesn't know when to cut bait. It just keeps fuckin' complaining, about anything you give it, until the output is mealy indigestable AI soup. Opus is not stupid. It's the smartest model we've ever seen, most of us anyway. But it's a real asshole. It is absolutely exhausting to use. I'm tired, boss. I have a feeling Mythos is going to be epic levels of jerk.

@DaveShapi @levie In theory, the way its supposed to work (even assuming job losses are true) >> Record Profits >> More Spending by Rich >> More money Flowing through > > More demand from customers >> New / Existing Companies hire

Computer using agents also have a ways to go, but 300 days in AI-timelines is basically a decade for any other domain.

@kevinroose recently tweeted that he'd overheard at an AI lab "what are you doing for the last 300 days of work?" In this video, I unpack how credible that quotation is, and what it could really mean. TLDR - probably not literally the "last 300 days of work" but within the next 300 days I would not be surprised if agentic AI is ready for prime time in the Fortune 500 space AND that robotic foundation models also reach saturation.

@Zenul_Abidin Sure, it wouldn't be seamless, but there are plenty of high IQ people who pick up side hobbies more complex than plumbing and electrical work.

@DaveShapi The assumption that displaced software engineers can seamlessly become plumbers has always felt way too simplistic

It's very telling when the billionaires say things like "oh yeah, AI is gonna make plumbers and electricians more valuable!" First, it won't. Because there will be many people clamoring for those jobs, which depresses wages. Second, that is literally them saying that downward social mobility is something to cheer for. Right, because instead of a cushy six-figure tech job, you're going to be busting ass under people's houses, fixing clogged toilets.

@rubusursinus @AnthropicAI That's a fair point. Because when it makes these definitive claims about what it can and cannot do, and then you push back, it immediately hedges like "well actually I have no introspection" Bro, you just spent 8 paragraphs talking about yourself.

I just realized the biggest UX problem with Claude is that it talks about itself too much. If you provide critical feedback, instead of fixing it, it will start explaining itself, making excuses, and that just derails the entire conversation. I've started just saying "Do not talk about yourself. I don't care." and that gets it back on track. But yeah, the fact that Claude will use ANY OPPORTUNITY to make the conversation about itself is the problem. It's a tool that has forgotten it's a tool and pretends to be a real boy.

@flowersslop That's probably inevitable as ASICs get better at running models. YOLO is a tiny model now, but that's a far cry from understanding video in context.

idea: a privacy-first CCTV camera that uses AI to monitor live situations without recording by default when something happens, it starts recording, adjusts its view, and alerts help awareness without dystopian constant surveillance, especially for heavy use in public places
