The same dark forces of bigotry, sectarianism, racism and fascism that burned people out of their homes in Belfast in 1921-22 and in 1969 because they were Catholic are the same forces that are now burning people out of their homes because of the colour of their skin.

The vicious knife attack in north Belfast was depraved. I commend those who acted with courage and selflessness to save the victim’s life. The perpetrator must face the full weight of the law. The racist violence of masked Loyalists who burned families out of their homes echoes the pogroms against nationalist families in 1969. These are the same people who will burn tricolours on bonfires in July. I stand in solidarity with Belfast Mayor Róis-Máire Donnelly. Those responsible for these threats and attacks will not succeed. In this I make the point Loyalist organisations can’t be expected to intervene- they are transitioning to civilian groups, and that has been the societal and state demand. The same people cannot call upon those groups when it suits.
