@asymmetricinfo @HistoryBoomer The key factor is whether these vehicles are privately owned or part of a shared fleet. If privately owned, concerns about congestion are real. But the expense per vehicle will be high enough to incentivize their use in a fleet, which makes sense for multiple reasons.

There’s a real worry the autonomous vehicles will reduce the inconvenience of driving and induce more of it, and some urbanites have transmogrified that into a worry that it will induce more cab demand. Marginally, maybe, but these vehicles are extremely expensive so it’s not clear to me how much you save on net by dumping the driver.

Why would this happen? Waymos would replace Ubers and maybe some private cars, not public transit. For every Waymo in, one car out, so no increase in traffic.
Or am I missing something?

feel like the Waymo safety discussion is ignoring how unsustainable/impossible it would be to shift a significant fraction of transportation to autonomous vehicles. It’s pretty cost prohibitive now but if it’s ever not, it will just choke cities in traffic

The most annoying thing about being human on Earth right now is the absolute waste of potential.
Brilliant minds and artists could be solving world hunger, climate change, and ending cancer, etc.

When the majority is due to folks like Manchin and Synema who obstruct attempts to deliver policy victories, at some point legitimate questions can be raised about whether you’d be better off without them.

Probably my most consistent opinion is that having a Ph.D. Indicates almost zero merit or skill outside of the person’s area of specialization. This is like bragging about hiring a Ph.D over a contractor for home repair.

The main takeaway from the Iran war is that American domestic politics is the greatest impediment to US military success. Our military put on a clinic but American constituencies have done everything possible to prevent a win. China is smiling watching America’s pundit imbeciles.

South Africa won’t allow Starlink to be licensed, even though I was BORN THERE, simply because I am not Black!
We were offered many times the opportunity to bribe our way to a license by pretending that a Black guy runs Starlink SA, but I have refused to do so on principle.

Why Elon Musk is RIGHT to fight South Africa’s racist rules blocking Starlink? Imagine this: Long ago, South Africa had very unfair laws called apartheid. They treated Black people badly and kept them from good jobs and money. When those bad laws ended, the country made new rules (called B-BBEE) to help Black people get a fair share of business. The idea was good – like a big helping hand. But now? For companies like Starlink to sell fast internet, they MUST give away 30% of their business to Black partners. Just because of skin color. Elon Musk was born in South Africa. He left as a teen to chase big dreams. Today, his company SpaceX wants to bring Starlink – super fast satellite internet – to South Africa. But the rules say no unless they give up part of the company. Elon said it right: “Starlink is not allowed because I’m not Black.” SpaceX promised to spend about $30 million (that’s 500 million rand!) to give FREE high-speed internet to 5,000 rural schools. That helps over 2.4 MILLION kids every year learn better, get jobs later, and have a brighter future. Real help for the people who need it most! Starlink already works in about 24 other African countries. Villages there now have internet for school, doctors, and business. South Africa’s villages are missing out because of these racist rules. Elon isn’t asking for special favors. He just wants fair play so Starlink can connect everyone fast. Internet = education, jobs, hope. Why hold back millions of kids over rules that pick by race and color?
