Here’s a bit more of the story than anyone requested for the non-TLDR folks: The year Max was born, our amazing dad died of pancreatic cancer… 28 days after diagnosis no less. It was so sudden, it truly destroyed my world. Our whole family’s world. Obviously crushed all of us. Before he passed, I was able to tell him that my wife was pregnant with our first child. Knowing Dad was terminal at that time, that conversation was incredibly powerful. He passed in March of 2005. The circumstances (one of my favorite and most heartfelt stories, for another time if you haven’t heard it) had me by his side that early morning, holding his hand in those final moments… a memory I’ll carry forever. Just another example of how wild and fragile life is… a surreal experience, especially considering our historically rocky relationship because of what an absolute pain in the ass I was growing up. I deserve a big ole karma boomerang in that regard but my kids have all been angels compared to me. And so… Max arrived that October, sharing a birthday with our mom. A serendipitous little twist which brought an almost unimaginable sense of joy and healing. There’s something profound about the cycle of life, the way one generation leaves us as another enters the world… and in that moment it all felt incredibly meaningful, magical and comforting. Hard to describe, really. But back to the name. Randomly, my dad had a theory about the letter X. He believed that letter made things more memorable. Stronger. Cooler. He believed it gave a name some punch. Think about how many standout words have an X… Fox, Apex, Phoenix, Lexus, Onyx, Vortex, Matrix… lol. He believed there was something special about that letter. So when it came time to name our first kiddo, that idea was in the back of my mind. What are some cool names for a boy containing the letter X? I always dug the name Max. Partly because it’s just a strong name, and partly because of fun stuff like little Max in Old School getting told “earmuffs”, and of course the great Max Fischer in Rushmore. Two of my all time favorite movies. The name “Max” worked for us on many levels. We were both on board. So once we’d settled on naming our son Max, I talked my sweet wife (who had previously talked me out of us naming our son “Cotton”) into spicing up his more formal name to Maximus. Maxwell or Maximilian were options I suppose. But I thought it was awesome for an adorable little baby to have a huge and powerful warrior’s name like MAXIMUS… (obviously it was a nod to the greatness of Gladiator). “What we do in life echoes in eternity.” So ultimately his name became a tribute to my dad, a nod to some of my favorite movies, and to bring it full circle, young Maximus got my dad’s middle name too. Max’s mom and I are extremely proud of the man that he’s become. I know my parents are watching on, incredibly proud as well. And now you know… the rest of the story. Gooooooood day.

@BenRogers @SkinWade Your "not on my watch" story was on my mind as I sat with her the night she passed, the day before my 50th birthday. Y'all talking through your experiences on the show provided some comfort during that time.

@BenRogers My mom got a nasty thyroid cancer diagnosis around the time @SkinWade was coming back from his recovery. His comment about never neck modeling again was on my mind sitting with her in the hospital after her surgery.
