Some uncertainty around when Team USA players will rejoin their NHL clubs. The Leafs are in Tampa Bay on Wed. USA has been invited to the Whitehouse tomorrow, so Toronto is unclear as to when Auston Matthews will return to the team. A challenge for all NHL clubs with US players.

The homestretch. 72 hours hours left of the Winter Olympics. And there are sure to be a few more twists and turns left in this rollercoaster of a Games. Good night from Milano sport fans.

The women’s hockey Olympic Gold Medal final between Canada and USA is not considered a “high demand” event, meaning media attending will get spots in the press box on a first come first serve basis. The only hockey game considered “high demand” is the Men’s hockey final. #Olympics #MilanoCortina2026

@Devin_Heroux Busy? Just kidding. 2 things 1. Has the video source presented by the Swedes been confirmed? 2 Kennedy claimed Swedes actions walking around his peel were wrong - rule violation or sportsmanship? Great Games coverage BTW.

World Curling has sent me this statement regarding the incidents and allegations of Canadian cheating from last night’s game against Sweden. Umpires were brought in after Sweden flagged the issue of second touches of the stone, specifically the granite. Here is the statement:

@Devin_Heroux Are we really surprised by the IOC’s decision? What happens next is important. Does Ukraine leave the Olympics as a protest? Do the athletes protest in some way - perhaps abandone the closing ceremonies ? Quiet sit down for the skeleton final races? Action is needed

Latvian luge athlete Ulla Zirne with a very pointed post just minutes ago. This comes in the wake of the IOC banning the Ukrainian skeleton athlete for his helmet depicting athletes and coaches from his country killed in the war with Russia. Zirne competing in Sochi and Pyeongchang.

This statement proves the IOC's decision is arbitrary and violates their own rules. 1. By their own words the IOC acknowledges this helmet is mourning dead athletes. Nowhere do they say it's a political statement. Therefore standards governing political statements do not and cannot apply. 2. They acknowledge that mourning is different in different places. If it's that different then they cannot apply an objective standard to it (the only objective way would be not to allow it at all in such a case). But they DO allow visual symbols of mourning by allowing black armbands. But they have no justification for why one visual symbol is allowed and another is not allowed. Without justification that decision is arbitrary. 3. They acknowledge that the helmet is not offensive or disruptive to other athletes by stating that they would allow him to wear it after the race. That means being worn in public in view of competitiors. If it is offensive or disruptive then they would have had to ban that too. By their own standards they are using this decision is non-sensical. Mourning can't be policed because everyone does it differently and perceives it differently but they will police only this specific version of mourning. But also it would have been okay for him to wear it but just not while racing but they can't explain why wearing it to race violates any rule.

🚨 IOC statement 2/3 Mr Heraskevych was able to display his helmet in all training runs. The IOC also offered him the option of displaying it immediately after the competition when going through the mixed zone. Mourning is not expressed and perceived in the same way everywhere in the world. In order to support athletes in their mourning, the IOC has put in place multifaith centres in the Olympic Villages and a place of mourning, so that grief can be expressed with dignity and respect. There is also the possibility to wear a black armband during competition under certain circumstances. During the Olympic Games athletes are also offered a number of opportunities to mourn and express their views, including in the media mixed zones, on social media, during press conferences and in interviews. The Guidelines on Athlete Expression were the result of a global consultation in 2021 with 3,500 athletes from all around the world. They have the full support of the IOC Athletes’ Commission and Athletes’ Commissions from International Federations and National Olympic Committees. Mr Heraskevych has been supported by the IOC for the last three editions of the Olympic Winter Games. Each time he was an Olympic scholarship holder. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the IOC also set up a solidarity fund for Ukrainian sport to support the athletes’ preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

@iocmedia Who would be offended- banned IOC countries? Terrible decision and an awful look for the IOC. No mention of the Russian flag on athlete helmets, or other signs of Russia support from competing athletes. Disgraceful decision.

🚨IOC statement 1/3 Skeleton pilot Vladylsav Heraskevych not allowed to participate at Milano Cortina 2026 after refusing to adhere to the IOC athlete expression guidelines Having been given one final opportunity, skeleton pilot Vladylsav Heraskevych from Ukraine will not be able to start his race at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games this morning. The decision followed his refusal to comply with the IOC’s Guidelines on Athlete Expression. It was taken by the jury of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) based on the fact that the helmet he intended to wear was not compliant with the rules. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has therefore decided with regret to withdraw his accreditation for the Milano Cortina 2026 Games. Despite multiple exchanges and in-person meetings between the IOC and Mr Heraskevych, the last one this morning with IOC President Kirsty Coventry, he did not consider any form of compromise. The IOC was very keen for Mr Heraskevych to compete. This is why the IOC sat down with him to look for the most respectful way to address his desire to remember his fellow athletes who have lost their lives following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The essence of this case is not about the message, it is about where he wanted to express it.
