The Ruins of Mycenaean Civilization: The Submycenaean, Covering a short phase between 1100-1000bc, is the very last gasp of Mycenaean art and civilization, and the initiation of the Greek Dark Ages. Writing had been Forgotten, Palaces were Abandoned, the incredibly rich Chamber Tombs of hte preceding period were replaced by more impoverish and simple Shaft Graves, and Wide-spread iron use is Introduced. Interestingly, the Submycenean has an unbroken Continuity at Athens back to the LHIIIb, possibly being the last major center of the Mycenaean Civilization before becoming a vital part of the Proto-Geometric Phase of the Greek Dark Ages. The Submycenaean Pottery exists contemporary to the Proto-Geometric Pottery, and might therefore represent the last Achaeans and their Settlements before the majority of them become Dorianized during the Geometric period.

The Decline of Mycenaean Civilization: The LHIIIc, starting in 1210bc, is the period of Decline for the Mycenaean Civlization. The Trojan War is usually dated to the beginning of this phase (1190bc) corresponding to the Destruction Layer at Troy VII. This entire decline corresponds to the Late Bronze Age Collapse, which also saw the destruction of most of the Middle East apart from Egypt. This Period differs starkly from the incredible prosperity of the LHIIIb with an abandoment of the major palaces such as Mycenae, and consequently, a termination of use of Linear B script. With nothing to replace it, Hellenic Civilization entered a Dark Age in which the knowledge of writing was temporarily lost until the Archaic Period of 800bc. Despite this, Mycenaean Civlization does not entirely collapse. Mycenaean Pottery diversifies greatly, the Civilization becomes overall more Depopulated than the preceeding period, and Pottery styles from the north start appearing in Mycenaean Settlements, however the Civilization continued on and we can not speak of Invaders from outside of Mycenaean Civilization being responsible for the destruction, but rather internal conflict. During this Period, the Philistines would have embarked from Mainland Greece or Crete to the Levant, realizing the long established and intense trade connections between the two lands established in the prior periods to invade the Levant and establish themselves.

@Maptysk Great job as always! However, some sites are missing, namely: Huelva in Spain and several in Sardinia (Su Nuraxi-Barumini, Bia e Palma-Selargius, Nuraghe Nastasi-Tertenia, Via Monastir-San Sperate, Duos Nuraghes-Borore, and Corti Beccia-Sanluri).

@Maptysk Thanks for the answer! Its my understanding that this is around the time the Phrygians began migrating into Anatolia, circa 1200bc, before rising to prominence in the power vacuum left by the Hittite collapse.

The Peak of Mycenaean Civilization: The LHIIIb, starting in 1330bc, is when the Mycenaean Civilization reaches its Peak. Sites of this period are the most Numerous compared to the others, and the Territory of Mycenaean Civlization stretches the furthest, encompassing most of Epirus in addition. This period of unprecedented Wealth and Power for Helladic Civilization precedes the Trojan War in ~1200bc, which would start at the very end of the LHIIIb, or on the Transition from LHIIIb to LHIIIc. In later phases, Mycenaean Civilization is less prosperous and has less influence overall, as we will see in coming posts.

💎KVALITY THREAD💎 ⚔️A Deep Dive into the Kura Araxes Culture ⚔️ This thread merges archaeology with population genetics to give a comprehensive picture of the Kura-Araxes culture (KAC). The archaeological information is primarily based on Batiuk et al.'s "Unravelling the Kura-Araxes cultural tradition across space and time" and Bakhshliyev et al.'s "Sioni Culture in the Context of Archaeological Excavations in Tumbul Tepe."

@Limb0_Man Directly north of the Mycenaeans are the Phrygians, then probably the Paeonians.

@Maptysk Do we have any idea of what was going on in the northern Balkans at the time? I know that the paleo-balkan languages are too unattested to have any kind of linguistic model, but what about material cultures?

@Maptysk @owen_mccor Wdym not defined as culture? Afaik ZVC does have some distinct cultural markers more than burials and trade relations. Tbf, Russian archaelogists have created so many subcultures that are probably part of one horizon only, it could be lot simpler if they followed it
