@Only1MoreThing @StocksnWeights @_benjamin_king No, 0.72g/kg is roughly the RDA (I think it's 0.8?). There are some studies showing some benefits in some people higher than that, up to about 0.72/lb of bw. That doesn't mean everyone always benefits from that much, only that some benefits have been shown in some people.

Low-protein is confusing to many, and I can see why. I actually hold 2 positions on low-protein. I'd argue that nobody needs more than adequate protein (sort of by definition, right?), but certain people need to restrict protein to reverse obesity & improve glucose control. 1. Adequate protein Nobody benefits from more than 0.72g/lb of bw. That's what the studies show. No, you don't work out harder. This is a "normal, adequate" amount of protein, e.g. 144g of protein for a muscular 200lbs athlete. This is not "low protein" but it's lower than what most gym bros recommend. But it's backed by the science. If you disagree with this your beef is not with me, it's with the scientific literature. Many people tolerate more than this without many issues. Many people tolerate more than this, but have some issues - elevated BUN/creatinine, elevated glucose, depressed metabolism, headaches, not feeling super well, digestive issues.. If you're doing keto/carnivore and your fasting glucose is regularly >90mg/dl, you might want to try lowering protein a little, to adequate levels. You tolerate 999g of protein per day and you love it? Good for you. This is not true for everybody. 2. Very-low protein Restricting protein to ~7% of kcals (say <0.3g protein/lb LBM) leads to FGF-21 and UCP-1 upregulation and mitochondrial "uncoupling," which massively increases cAroliEs out and suppresses hunger. It is also, ironically, "protein sparing" in that you will lose much less lean/muscle mass than when starving yourself by restricting cArOliEs across the board. This is a drastic intervention for obese people who can't seem to lose fat on other, higher-protein diets like carnivore. This isn't everyone, I'd estimate it's maybe 30% of obese who need this, and another 20-30% or so who find it easier and enjoy it more than the high-protein approach, but for whom it is not strictly necessary.

INTRODUCING: The Height-in-inches Protein Rule Your height in inches = your daily protein intake in grams Example: 6’0” = 72” = 72g Maintenance only. Empirical, not derived. #Ketogenic #KetoAF #Lipivore #HeightProteinRule

It was a pleasure to introduce @KetoCarnivore to one of my favorite cuts of beef - the culotte. She introduced me to lamb brains. She didn’t want any croissants, though.

The grain-fed demonization creates artificial scarcity: Only 3% of US beef is grass-finished. If everyone demanded only grass-fed, 97% of people couldn't afford beef. Perfect becomes the enemy of good, making excellent nutrition inaccessible. Sometimes the greater good requires accepting "very good."

@KetoCarnivore Eating fat to appetite first, then protein to appetite seems more natural than eating foods premixed to a given F:P ratio, bc in the first approach each signal gets to express and be answered independently at each meal, revealing true needs rather than approximating them.

By "low", I mean minimum, not less. This would ideally be determined by protein hunger *after* fat hunger is satisfied, or using something like 2:1 with every bite, rather than with calculations. twitter.com/Only1MoreThing…

Difficulty fasting, even when preconditioned with a low carb diet, is a sign of metabolic impairment. @siobhan_huggins and I have been suggesting / hypothesizing that this might be a good predictor of success with a high fat, lower protein "KetoAF" approach.
Chris Smolinski@ChrisSmolinski

@richcollins @cambridge_pt @KetoCarnivore @BillOccham IMHO: If you have to force a fast, and it's difficult to go even 4 or 6 hours without eating, there's something else wrong, probably with the overall diet.

@Fabiensapiens @ScottAppliedSci My point is that the anti high fat animal food people as well as the carnivore folk both use modern hunter gatherers as some type of proxy for “carnivore diets”. Both are wrong. We need to look further back if we want to know what humans really ate prior to extinctions and ag.

@KetoCarnivore Do you suspect F:P ≈ 2 per bite is the Goldilocks ratio for arriving at minimum adequate protein — and that going higher (F:P = 2.5, 3, 4+) risks falling below adequacy, because the greater fat load suppresses appetite before enough protein is consumed? Thank you.

@KetoCarnivore This thread is the first instance I see you specifically recommended “low protein”. Can you define what “low” means here, and whether “low protein” might be necessary long term for some (or is “low protein” only for the short/medium term?)? Thank you.

@KetoCarnivore @AndrewMorcheles Amber, in a ketocarnivore context, does sustaining that kind of metabolic output require F:P ≫ 1? And, if so, would you ever consider pushing your own ratio above ≈ 1 toward that longevity/healthspan goal? Thank you.

@AndrewMorcheles Not in the way I think you mean it. I mean that you are generating lots of energy metabolically. That will require a lot of eating and allow a lot of movement, but can't necessarily be caused to happen by eating and exercising.

@sudas1891 @Will_of_Europa @BerbarianWizard @sudas1891, I don’t know what metabolic context your two 1500-cal quotes above refer to. If it was a very low insulin:glucagon context and still with body fat reserves to burn, that apparently-low caloric intake might (might) be doable safely for a while?
L. Amber O'Hearn@KetoCarnivore

@exfatloss @Only1MoreThing @richcollins @603_4me @MeTheAngryCat @Leo_Abstract @TuckerGoodrich @siobhan_huggins @mct4health All I'm saying is that when your hormonal state is very low I:G, it's much more likely to be true that "body fat can [/will] fill the energy gap", though of course it's not a guarantee.

@reallyoptimized @markeatsmeat @exfatloss Saladino himself may be responsible for a wave of Carnivore failures due to insisting, against the experience of long term Carnivores, on high intake of liver, and even selling it to people in forms to bypass the taste aversion that likely develops from overload. 3/
