@sakebu_cheese_ Rural US does this with garden and farm goods on the honors system. Urban US has to lock up deodorant in cases. We live in different worlds here.

Truly outlandish to realize that people are actually paying $58/night for a place to camp these days. I mean, that's more than half what a motel costs. And nine times out of ten, right down the road there's state forest where you can camp for free. Ridiculous.

@tanpukunokami I guess the idea of peanut butter is very off-putting to a lot of foreigners, especially Europeans. They assume all of it is loaded with added sweeteners but basic simple peanut butter is pretty ubiquitous.

@TheShawnHendrix 🌽 is no good for you, anyway. Human beings are not made to eat grass or grass seeds, and grain is grass. Better to feed the grass to animals that can eat it, and then eat those animals, than to eat grass itself. That’s why you all get sick 🤢.

I think it’s too late for rain. This is going to be catastrophic. This corn is showing signs of extreme drought. Plan accordingly and make sure others know.

@TheShawnHendrix That's bad. Some breeds might make it. Others will be little more than silage. Local to me the corn is doing well so far. Supposed to get more rain Wednesday.

@japan_nobunaga Especially true in rural areas, but yes, many people drive trucks every day. They're more expensive to run for sure, but many people need them for hauling and towing. Some suburban people just like them because they sit higher.

question from Tokyo Why are there so many pickup trucks in America? In anime, every high school kid seems to drive a huge truck to school 🛻 In Japan, trucks are mostly for work. Regular people drive small cars. Is the anime accurate? Do normal people really daily-drive pickups?

A significant severe weather event is likely on Wednesday across the Midwest and Ohio Valley, with damaging winds and tornadoes returning. This is still several days out so the area may shift a little, but the odds of a severe weather outbreak are increasing. Stay tuned and spread the word about this growing threat.

A biotech company is keeping recently deceased human brains active on a high-tech life-support system. The reasons? The company says they want to pave the way for an animal-free era of neurological drug testing. Spun out of Yale University research, biotechnology startup Bexorg is challenging traditional drug testing boundaries by placing donated human brains on an artificial life-support system called BrainEx. Shortly after a donor's death, the company connects the bodiless organ to pumps that circulate an oxygen-rich, nutrient-dense blood substitute to restore cellular and metabolic activity. To address the immediate ethical concerns surrounding consciousness, Bexorg keeps these brains under deep anesthesia using propofol, ensuring there is no organized neural firing or awareness. The organs remain active for just 24 hours—providing researchers with a critical window to test drugs for diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's on actual human tissue—before being dissected for detailed analysis. This whole-organ technology is part of a broader, high-stakes shift toward replacing flawed animal models, which contribute to a staggering failure rate in central nervous system drug trials. Other forward-looking companies are pursuing alternative biological avenues; Tessara Therapeutics is growing thousands of miniature, human stem-cell-derived 'mini-brains,' while Cortical Labs has engineered a platform that embeds living neurons onto silicon chips. Even more radically, startups like R3 Bio are exploring genetically engineered, brainless human bodies to serve as whole-body medical models. Together, these groundbreaking platforms could significantly accelerate the development of life-saving therapeutics while moving medicine beyond the ethical and biological limitations of animal testing. source: Cross, R. (2025). Exclusive: Rebooting dead human brains, a biotech startup seeks to reinvent early drug testing work. Endpoints News.

@LeahRay44 Glucose syrup is probably corn syrup. That's the sweetness, plus the sugar. Pectin is the gel. Citric acid and sodium citrate are chemical preservatives to keep the food from going bad without refrigeration. Food products are shipped a long way here.

Just had these “artificially flavoured” sweets in America 🇺🇸 I’m pretty sure most of these ingredients are banned in the UK/europe but they still tasted so good. What is in them that makes it so sweet 😭😭 What should I try next?

@Notwokenow I have an old electric stove and oven. I like the oven okay, but the stovetop isn't great. Works good enough for now, though.

Before I had a gas stove, electric was fine. But after years of using gas stoves, I know electric stoves SUCK. My (new to me) apartment has an electric stove and the heat is very inconsistent. I’m not making homemade biscuits until I better understand the oven temperature. Are you gas or electric?

An interesting satellite photo of my state of Tennessee, highlighting the many waterways in the state. It almost looks like an abstract artist's version. Tennessee was a transportation hub in the 19th century, both by barge and the many railroads that crisscrossed the state. My house is right under the double t in Chattanooga. Have you ever been to Tennessee?
