Not all of the surprises are known yet and there are more to come. Some in the next months to years, but the really big surprises are a bit further off than that.

@benjdod @joaompfe I'm thinking you don't actually know how shallow of a safeguard typing is. Don't use it as a crutch. Typing only makes certain accidents more visible. Bad code in a strongly typed language is still bad code.

@joaompfe Agreed. I never liked the idea that there’s no guarantees that a thing won’t be shapeshifted at any point and screw you over. The pro-untyped argument always sounded like a skill-issue based argument, which is silly. The goal is not to make the problem harder to solve.

The biggest reason I cannot work in an untyped language is because the first thing I do when trying to understand a piece of code is to understand the type of the variables in scope, and if I can’t do that confidently everything else fails.

@keysmashbandit Some people are good at thinking of novel solutions and applying existing knowledge in novel ways. It goes beyond "this looks like this", which accounts for 90% of human thought and 100% of current LLM inference.

My big problem with "AI is only good at solving problems similar/analogous to those they've encountered" is that that statement is just generally true of everyone, which is why we have like, university. And research papers. It's not an interesting thing to say!

If David Duke the former Grand Wizard of the KKK creates the word “Zio” and then the Leftists popularize that word, my conclusion is they are the same to me. I see no difference.

@ibuildthecloud (Is it even a hammer if it can't use webhooks every time you swing? You need to be able to see your swing efficiency on the dashboard built into the hacksaw.)

@ibuildthecloud Imagine being a construction worker and finding they replaced the hammers with something that does the same thing and looks similar, but you now have to relearn how to do what you've done a million times because someone decided it's better this way. And again in another 5 years.

I'm so uncool, that when I want a detachable session I still use screen. And all I know is "ctrl+a d" and "screen -dr". That's the master of almost 20 years of usage.

@yoavkaufman No, this is the Navy you're talking about. They only like it in the rear.

If the U.S. Navy has a rank of Rear Admiral, does that imply the existence of the rank of Front Admiral?

@CoreyWriting Israel either has to fully align with American conservative values or progressive values. If it does anything else, it will alienate some Americans. That is the worst thing it could do.

@CoreyWriting Honest question: do you think their messaging should only go based on how random Americans will react?

@MaxNordau There were non-Italian mafias, therefore the Mafia is not Italian. Flawless logic. Also, there are non-Italians in Italy, therefore Italy is not Italian.

When I saw this story about the torments inflicted upon British Jews in their home country, on the @BBCNews site, around 7.15 am, it had been filed to "Middle East". Minutes later, it had been corrected to "UK". I would be interested to hear an explanation for the original error.

@DavidBennun @BBCNews The headline itself is surprising. I would have expected something like "Zionists cry 'antisemitism' while protesters rally against Israel's aggressions".
