Since 2015, Will Wright — the legendary video game designer behind 'The Sims' and 'SimCity' — has been consumed by a new obsession: how our ever-shifting library of memories forges the self. In his mind, each personal memory from your life is like a snow globe, a world inside a world. But that world could be connected to countless others in conscious and unconscious ways. He wanted to create a game in which a player could tinker with that unending maze of inner microverses, logging their significant memories for an AI to analyze and then mapping their own psyche the way they had mapped digital metropolises in ‘SimCity.’ It would be called ‘Proxi: Yesterday's You Tomorrow.’ The concept was part computerized LEGO set, part RPG, part Enneagram, part transhumanist mind-uploading fantasy, part reboot of Borges and Proust for the LLM age. It would be, in some ways, Wright's most personal video game yet. Fast forward to October 2024 — after spending ten years, a million dollars of Wright's own money, and a few million from investors; after they’d already started building out the game’s universe — the game was (and still is) nowhere close to being finished. Eric Boodman spent time with Wright and his ‘Proxi’ crew to find out when — or if — one of the most celebrated video-game designers ever's next (and even wilder) act will come to life: nymag.visitlink.me/ElSdEG

@chloeinvermont I found the defense witness on dog bites uncredible. She seemed to insert herself into the case and had never testified as a dog expert before. Remarkably, she claimed there were no puncture wounds on the victim’s arm, and no dog DNA was found on his clothing either.

In life, I believe in statistical probabilities. In Karen Read’s case, the odds seem slim that a drunk woman accidentally breaks her taillight while her Lexus reverses at 24 mph, just as the victim’s iPhone goes silent. This is a domestic violence/OUI vehicle-pedestrian strike.

@MorbidKnowledge The rest of the story: She was sentenced to death in 1994 and is currently on death row. Also, this literal photo of her rolling in the insurance money was used as key evidence against her in court. Criminal masterminds usually don't leave Polaroids.

In 1988, Mary Ellen Samuels had her estranged husband e*ecuted to collect $500,000 life insurance. She spent it on a Cancun trip where she was photographed, covered in $20,000 cash. She then hired two men to str*ngle the hitman who was about to confess.

An Australian breakfast radio show spent their morning show today seeing how far they could drive their Tesla past 0%. Probably the most entertaining piece of Tesla content I’ve ever watched 😂

@theficouple Someone with all those fancy credits should probably understand basic stuff no? Historically, the vast majority of cars are depreciating assets that typically lose 20% or more of their value in the first year alone. After five years, most have lost approximately 55% to 60%.

When you bought the $50,000 Tesla Model Y to save on gas & maintenance. Then you learned: - It loses 20-35% of its value by year 3 - It loses 55-58% of its value by year 5 So by year 5 you lost $35,000+ of value? ....Congrats on saving ~$1,000/yr on gas.

It looks like DLSS 5 was an AI-gen filter after all. YouTube Creator “Daniel Owen” asked Nvidia some questions regarding DLSS 5 and if it essentially just takes a single 2D frame with motion vectors as input to generate the output frame. The amount of buzz words Jensen Huang said like; Neural Rendering, Content-Control Generative AI and generative control at the geometry level just to end up admitting that DLSS 5 is what everyone suspected; an AI filter on top of your video-games.

I saw this video and I had to start laughing. This guy's doing a demo of his special secret product that helps remove sand off your skin when you're at the beach. Cool, right? It's baby powder. It's literally just 100% baby powder with a different brand name and a different marketing angle. This guy didn't have to do research and development, find manufacturers, go through all this regulatory crap. He just called the factory and said, "hey, you make baby powder, right? Okay, put it in my packaging. Cool?" And he's making tons of money. Nail the packaging, change your life.

I'm glad I got to enjoy gaming in the era before you needed a $7,000 rig to redraw frames and generate slop frames to hit 62 fps in a AAA game.

DLSS 5 definitely crosses some lines around artistic intent. I’m not a fan of AI inserting itself into existing creative work. But “it looks bad” is just not a serious take
