The U.S. Navy doesnโ€™t understand how resilient oil tankers are, according to comments from former CENTCOM commander in this TWZ interview. Itโ€™s surprising and not. USN rarely deals with commercial shipping issues. But could be why weโ€™re still talking about naval escorts rather than air power to reopen Hormuz. Hereโ€™s Votelโ€™s comments: โ€œBut the mines, I think, are a really, really hard issue. And when we think about one of these big tankers, so they are just really vulnerable, theyโ€™re thin-hulled, getting into this very narrow traffic scheme thatโ€™s there โ€“ two miles wide, right in the middle of the Strait and then hitting a mine and being disabled on the spot. Not only will we have a mine problem, we have a disabled ship problem and an ecological disaster, and a whole bunch of other things there. So in my view, I think the worst case situation kind of looks like a deliberate mining effort by the Iranians.โ€ Wrong info: โ€”Oil tankers today have double hulls, neither thin nor vulnerable. But even when tankers had single hulls during the Iran-Iraq war, they were so resilient to mines that U.S. navy destroyers sailed BEHIND the tankers for protection. *The tankers protected the destroyers from mines.* โ€”The narrowest navigable passage is 20 miles, not 2 miles. The traffic lanes are 2 miles wide to reduce accidents in a congested waterway, but itโ€™s not a physical barrier. Itโ€™s like the difference between the physical width of a whole highway vs. the lanes painted for cars. Tankers can sail outside the lines for 20 miles. Multiple disabled tankers couldnโ€™t block the strait. To be fair, Votel called it a traffic scheme but I think this point is easily misunderstood. โ€”Spilling oil isnโ€™t ecologically good, obvs, but oil cargoes in VLCCs are stored in 15-17 different cells (depending on ship design) and if you rupture one, you only spill its contents โ€” maybe ~120,000 barrels โ€” on a total cargo of 2 million barrels. Still not good but not total emptying. โ€”Even ruptured tankers, even incinerated tankers, usually stay afloat and can often be repaired so they can sail away under their own power. That happened with the MV Limburg off the coast of Yemen in 2002. It was struck by a suicide boat, lost 50k barres of oil and burned for 2 days. On day 3 it was repaired and sailed away on its own power. It was subsequently renamed the Maritime Jewel and was in service until at least 2009. Any mission to open the Strait of Hormuz under Iranian fire would be costly and risky. But itโ€™s shocking to me that the USN @USNavy @CENTCOM doesnโ€™t know the basics of oil shipping when theyโ€™ve been preparing this contingency for years. They need to talk with industry, stat. The Coast Guard @USCG might have this knowledge because they DO deal with commercial shipping issues but theyโ€™re so far down the bureaucratic prestige chain Iโ€™m not sure people would listen (sorry USCG, you rock and Iโ€™m a big fan). This lack of understanding might be why the USN and U.S. policymakers keep talking about using naval escorts rather than air power, as if this was still WWII. @defpriorities @haltman twz.com/news-features/โ€ฆ

A devastating indictment of Ofcom, the media regulator, which has let GB News to pump out Reform party propaganda and drive a coach and horses through the UK broadcasting laws. @arusbridger and I will be discussing this on @mediaconfpod shortly !

Russian Psy-Op Targets Hungary-Ukraine Relations Ukraineโ€™s Security Service @ServiceSsu has uncovered a large-scale Russian information operation targeting the Hungarian community in Zakarpattia. The method is deliberate โ€” and dangerous. Using IP phone spoofing, Russian operatives placed calls that appeared to come from Ukrainian numbers. During these calls, they: โš ๏ธ posed as โ€œUkrainian nationalistsโ€ or even law enforcement โš ๏ธ issued threats to ethnic Hungarians โš ๏ธ demanded they leave Ukraine The goal: to create fear, distrust, and ethnic tension inside Ukraine. Investigators confirmed the calls were actually originating from Russia. Why this matters. This is what modern war looks like beyond the battlefield: โ€ข not just missiles and drones โ€ข but psychological operations targeting communities โ€ข attempts to trigger internal divisions and international friction Russia is not only attacking Ukraineโ€™s infrastructure โ€” it is trying to undermine its social fabric. As the SBU warns: โ€œWe urge citizens not to fall for such provocations. If you receive threats or suspicious messages, immediately inform law enforcement.โ€ Ukraine is responding by exposing and disrupting the operation โ€” but awareness matters just as much. Because in todayโ€™s war, resilience is not only military โ€” itโ€™s societal. #Ukraine #InfoWar #HybridWar #RussiaUkraineWar

Very bad for Britain, which is uniquely susceptible. 1/ The Iran war sent British wholesale gas prices surging โ€” up nearly 90% in a month. This hits Britain with unique force because the nation remains 75% dependent on fossil fuels for its primary energy needs. 2/ As gas sets the marginal price for all electricity, a spike in the Middle East becomes an immediate, unavoidable tax on every British business and household. 3/ The reality is crushing. Analysts warn of household bills hitting ยฃ2,500 if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed for more than six weeks. 4/ As energy-driven inflation surges, hopes for interest rate cuts have vanished. Britain is now servicing a ยฃ2.9 trillion debt mountain with ยฃ114 billion of interest expected to be paid this year. Thatโ€™s nearly double the nationโ€™s entire core defense budget. 5/To make matters worse, Britain has no supply buffer. Westminster based its storage needs on optimistic assumptions of frictionless global markets. It has a maximum gas storage capacity of just twelve days. Compare that to Germanyโ€™s 89 days, Franceโ€™s 103, or the Netherlandsโ€™ 123. 6/ Unable to stockpile, Britain is forced to buy gas at the worst possible moment. European gas futures have already surged above โ‚ฌ60 per megawatt-hour, roughly six times the US price. 7/Britainโ€™s main gas provider, Norway, is at maximum capacity, and Qatar (the UKโ€™s swing supplier) had already declared force majeure, halting shipping after the unprecedented shutdown at Ras Laffan. Now, missile attacks on Ras Laffan, and threats by Trump to pull out of the Strait of Hormuz.

The gas processing and compression facilities at Ras Laffan in Qatar feed a number of strategic projects beyond LNG but most importantly the Dolphin pipeline which supplies the UAE with natural gas used in power and water desalination.

SNCF protocol for such emergencies is stoppage, and immediate train and line inspection headed by the driver involved, as happened last night (45 minute delay) This can be harrowing for staff and passengers, but not as harrowing as it was for the boar.

Been investigating the physics of wild boar-train collisions after being involved in one on Eurostar last night. Boar is obliterated, unsurprisingly, but not without potentially causing damage to undercarriage, including brake lines, and high-speed sensors.
