@MogusMonro15252 @quietnitein @Jordan_W_Taylor Britain and its Empire fought alone until 1942 held the line while the Americans sat back and let fascism spread because it was so close to their own ideologies, they only got a dose of bravery when they themselves were attacked.

@quietnitein @dandroid20XX @Jordan_W_Taylor You did. It was the order of the time that is ending. After 2 WWs, 80 million dead, we thought it best to limit the military for that continent. All agreed. Social programs instead of military. Let them battle over a football. It worked. Now the US is broke. Is what it is.

There's been a lot of discussion this week about comically low salaries in Britain, and much cope and sour grapes as Brits try to save face in front of the yanks. The UK is poorer than all fifty US states on paper, so it’s a valid discussion. Let's have it! Firstly it's true, so let's not pretend it isn't. By averages, medians or the great state of Mississippi, the Americans get paid more. I work in US multinationals in Ireland so I get to see first hand the difference in cost rates and it's real, there's no point stressing about it: Either get a work visa or don't. I'm British, so I've seen both sides of the divide and know that comparing ourselves to America is silly, because it's on a completely different planet. But Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, among many others, also do more with what they have than us, so what gives? Firstly, let's shoot down the obvious nonsense: British people aren't lacking in spirit or vigour, or animal instincts or innovation. It's not a nation of losers or a giant crab bucket of bitter malcontents… no more than anywhere else, anyway. There's probably an extra frisson of class-based snobbishness, but people are people everywhere and Brits are more of the same, so the country's underperformance isn't some kind of divine judgement on our character. Secondly let's stop thinking about Britain as a monolith, because in reality it's two economies, not one. This island has other islands inside it, which outperform much of the world: London, Cambridge, Oxford and half a dozen others casually take in globally-leading research, finance, engineering and practically all of Formula 1. Then there's oil, jet engines, pharmaceuticals, fusion and AI. There's stuff going on in the UK that flies vanguard for the entire world. But then there's the other Britain, which I was born into. This is the vast hinterland that spreads outside the islands of wealth and sees echoes of itself in the dingy flats and drawn faces of Britain's very successful, and deeply depressing, soap operas. Thirdly, it's not all bad and it's not all about the money. Manchester is a lot poorer than similarly-sized Dublin or Minneapolis but it's also a lot more vibrant and fun. There are a hundred reasons a Brit might want to stay put instead of shipping out to Boston: Culture, community, football or just not wanting your kids to get weird accents. All good reasons, but we're still not doing as well as we should be. What gives? We need to face reality, fellow Brits. We're not the richest kids on the block or anywhere close to it: Our woodwork is decaying, our lawn is ragged, our car is old and we're keeping up appearances with fresh coats of paint. Nevermind comparing ourselves to the USA, because Poland will probably overtake us soon. There's no point coping about it online, pretending that 'Our NHS' makes up for it or lambasting immigrants, because that won't help either. What will? Britain's already good at flashy stuff. It grows more unicorns than anywhere else in Europe, it has cutting edge science and technology, a gigantic financial centre and is getting more proficient at linking University R&D into the commercial sphere. It's got the stable rule of law and all the tricky bits sorted, but struggles with the basic stuff… Britain doesn't build. Decades of not building infrastructure or housing doesn't kill you immediately, but over the decades it paralyses a country, and that's what we're seeing. A discretionary over-centralised planning system whose prime commandment is “Thou Shalt Not!” paralyses private building just as much as endless legal challenges hamstring new national infrastructure. So the moral of this story? We've got the hard bits right, but the basics wrong. That's not the worst position to be in, because it means it's fixable. On the one hand, the only thing standing in our way is ourselves. But on the other hand, we've only got ourselves to blame.

@dandroid20XX @Jordan_W_Taylor That all might be true, but what did you give up? Drinking water isn't an issue. You gave up your history and self respect. You counted on a bunch of kids, a continent away, to provide you protection for eternity. The free ride might be over. Everyone is now bankrupt.

Fellow millennials—I'm sorry to share this—content warning. This is John Abendshien, 79, of Lake Forest, IL. He previously was the owner of the Winnetka house where the “Home Alone” movie was filmed. Abendshien was arrested this week and charged with numerous felonies after authorities found him in possession of child sexual abuse material of children aged 4 to 15. Smh just beyond horrifying. There is no bottom to the depravity. Once again. Not an immigrant. Not a drag queen. Not a Mexican.

@QasimRashid "Once again. Not an immigrant. Not a drag queen. Not a Mexican." Which would strongly suggest that we have enough home-grown problems that we sure as hell don't need to import more.

I think a huge part of the reason why no government has been able to enact difficult pro-growth reforms is that the average voter still believes we remain a rich country. You hear this in politicians’ rhetoric “the sixth richest country in the world”. We’re the sixth largest economy but now far from the richest. Per capita we’re tanking down the rankings. One of the reasons why Poland or China have been able to have growth miracles in recent years is they think like a developing country. They know they were poor and they have to build to get rich. We think we are rich and that we don’t have to build anything anymore, or that when we do, it has to be the most expensive possible version of what we build. Bat tunnels. Fish Discos. Kittiwake hotels. We think we’re rich so we can afford to chase some wealth creators away, afford to mandate public biodiversity net gain on every development in the country, and afford to ratchet up state pension spending five times faster than the rate of growth in the economy. We’re suffering from acute ‘rich country delusion’. It’s only once we realise we’re far poorer than we should be that we can start to fix this nonsense.

Horrifying video which totally contradicts the Israeli military claims that the ambulances are being used for ‘military purposes’. The attacks killed 4 medics in Nabatieh in south Lebanon including a young father we interviewed a few weeks ago, Mahdi Abou Zeid. I’ll repost the report in this thread. His last words to us:’ If we rest, who will do the job’ 🧵

@MattisRedacted The Emancipation Proclamation was in 1863 two years after the war started. How could it be fought to end slavery if they didn't decide to end slavery until the war was more than half way through?

IRA Victims Face Bankruptcy. Veterans Face Suicide. Adams Stands in Front of a Bobby Sands Mural. Fred is a special forces veteran. He served this country in Northern Ireland under close scrutiny and specific authorisation. He did what the state asked of him. Decades later, the state informed him that his medical records had to be disclosed to the next of kin of the terrorists he was involved in stopping. On learning this, Fred tried to kill himself. His wife intervened. He survived. All subsequent legal communication now goes through her because direct contact causes him to become suicidal. Keir Starmer says he is getting this right. In the same week that Fred's case became public, three IRA bombing victims appeared in the High Court in London. John Clark, 82, was injured in the Old Bailey bombing of 1973. Barry Laycock, 86, was caught in the Manchester Arndale bombing of 1996. Jonathan Ganesh, 57, was wounded in the Docklands bombing the same year. Together they had spent four years pursuing Gerry Adams for a symbolic pound in damages, forcing him into a British court for the first time to answer questions about his alleged leadership of the Provisional IRA. At the final stage of the trial, a judge indicated he was considering whether the case amounted to an abuse of process. Had he decided that it did, the cost protection order shielding the three men from Adams's legal costs would have been revoked, leaving them potentially liable for half a million pounds. Outmatched financially and facing life-changing consequences, they had no realistic choice but to withdraw. With the case abandoned, Adams stood in front of a Bobby Sands mural in Belfast and declared victory. Consider what the legal system produced in a single week. A veteran who nearly died because the process required him to share his medical history with the families of those he fought. Three bombing victims, two of them in their eighties, driven from court by the threat of financial ruin. And the man they were suing, celebrating his escape in front of a hunger striker's portrait. The associations representing the SAS, Special Boat Service and Special Reconnaissance Regiment have written to MPs describing the treatment of their members as a national disgrace. Elderly special forces veterans, they wrote, are being relentlessly persecuted in the courts of Northern Ireland. Some are being driven to suicide by the treatment at the hands of the state they served. Reservists are now being brought into the regular SAS to fill roles vacated by serving soldiers walking out rather than face the same fate as Fred. The government's response is that it has never and will never draw a moral equivalence between the armed forces and terrorist organisations. The words are correct. The actions tell a different story. Fred's medical records go to the terrorists' families. Adams's victims face bankruptcy. The veterans appearing at Belfast magistrates court on April 20th belong to a unit whose actions a coroner already ruled justified. The process continues regardless. Starmer says he worked in Northern Ireland. He says he has spoken to many of the people affected. He says he knows he must get this right. When Sir David Davis raised the plight of veterans in the Commons, Starmer accused him of cheapening the debate and political point-scoring. Fred's wife now reads his legal correspondence before deciding whether he can bear it. Three elderly bombing victims stood down from court rather than risk financial ruin. Gerry Adams celebrated in front of a mural. The debate does not need cheapening. The facts have already done it. "With the case abandoned, Adams stood in front of a Bobby Sands mural in Belfast and declared victory."

I have been teaching self defense for over 20 years. I’m highly trained in Krav Maga, which I’d argue has the best defensive techniques against armed assault of any style. Taking down a knife wielding assailant is EXTREMELY difficult and dangerous. You will get cut, bad, even in the best of scenarios. This is not the movies. A knife is a deadly weapon and he was attacking to kill. Shoot the guy.

I always weep reading the Wikipedia pages of senior Singaporean politicians. The general career path seems to be: Excel at school and secure a scholarship to study some super difficult subject, like maths or physics, at Cambridge University. Excel at university and get a scholarship to do a post-grad degree in governance or an MBA at Harvard. Join the Singaporean military and excel. Reach at least the rank of Brigadier or General. Enter politics. Excel even compared with others who have similar CVs, rise to become a senior position. Compare that with the career path of the average senior British politican. Get the same results as every other middle class child at school. Do PPE or straight up politics at university. Leverage your contacts to become a SPAD for a cabinet or shadow cabinet member. Get a column writing gig at the Spectator, Economist or New Statesman Become a more senior SPAD. Run in an impossible to win seat to prove you really want to be in parliament. Get parachuted into a safe seat as a rising star. Get a junior ministerial position in the first reshuffle after the election. Get made a cabinet member after the next election. Now, why is Singapore an extremely well run country and we are not?
