Rivian lost $3.6 billion last year on 42k deliveries. That's $86,000 of value destruction PER VEHICLE that left their factory.
Their solution? Partner with Uber to turn a $58K camping SUV into a robotaxi... to compete with Tesla's Cybercab... YIKES
Every 12-18 months, this company finds a new partner to write a check:
- Amazon: $1.3B equity + 100K van order
- VW: $5.8B joint venture
- US DOE: $6.6B loan
- Uber: $1.25B robotaxi deal (today)
The moment they announced the Uber deal, they admitted they're pushing back profitability AGAIN to fund an autonomy program that can't even handle stoplights.
Tesla's Cybercab is purpose built at $25,000 with no steering wheel. The cost per mile math isn't even close.
The Uber deal is to deploy 50,000 robotaxis by 2031.
Slight problem:
The car doesn't exist yet. The factory doesn't exist yet. The autonomy software doesn't exist. Manufacturing is HARD.

@thejefflutz @WilliamShatner twice a year. and it's not about driving without peeing. it's about margins that allow reasonable use in adverse conditions like harsh winters. ideally without charging the battery to 100%. on a 300-mile ev, you use 200 at best. guess you're Kyle conner and arrive at 0%

@YTJustGetATesla It will be a digital assistant like openclaw, which is open source and free. It will be able to manage your emails, calendar, execute coding tasks, and so on. Stiff competition, and of privacy concerns, as you would have to give “Optimus” access to all your private information.

The media is running a story today about how a Cybertruck “allegedly” crashed on a Texas highway. Spoiler alert, the crash happened while the human driver was in control.
The law firm, which is seeking $1 million, says that last summer Justine Saint Amour was driving her Cybertruck with Autopilot engaged. There’s just one problem — Autopilot is a legacy lane keeping system that never shipped on Cybertruck.
The driver then admits that before the crash they disengaged the system and started driving manually. Indeed, the video shows the truck starting to turn before the driver disengaged and drove into the wall.
Tesla hasn’t officially responded to the lawsuit yet, but available telemetry indicates the driver probably wasn’t paying attention, got startled, and crashed. There doesn’t seem to be any attempt to steer back towards the on-ramp in the video, rather you see the trajectory change from turning with the ramp to driving straight into it.
When you crash your car, people tend to put blame on anyone but themselves. A high profile company like Tesla, with a CEO who is the wealthiest man on Earth? Yeah, they kinds of BS lawsuits happen often.
Let’s wait for more data and discovery to take place, but based on the evidence i’m seeing so far that doesn’t look like something FSD — even an older V13 — would do.
