Jean-Claude Mézières (1938–2022) was a legendary French comic artist and one of the most influential visionaries in science fiction illustration. His aesthetic helped shape the visual universe of Luc Besson’s 1997 film The Fifth Element, where he worked as a concept artist. Many of the film’s iconic elements—layered megacities, flying traffic lanes, and eccentric extraterrestrial environments—echo the visual language he had developed decades earlier in his comics.

@HeavyMetalInk and little ppl know... but he was also long time friend with Moebius, they met in art school in Paris back in 1952.

Alongside writer Pierre Christin, Mézières co-created the groundbreaking comic series Valérian and Laureline in 1967, a space-opera that followed two time-traveling agents navigating strange planets, alien civilizations, and political intrigue across the galaxy. The series became a cornerstone of European sci-fi comics, known for its imaginative worlds, dense futuristic cities, and wildly inventive alien species.

@CaseyDHudson I remember spending a lot of time examining the originals that where displayed at the Star Wars Identities expo back in 2012... Stunned by how small they where!

Got these Ralph McQuarrie concept art books a while back, and still working my way through them. Every page is worth studying for a few minutes.

@pascalblanche Oh! It's you! I remember my friends I talking about old-school art one day and they shared some of your work! Kinda cool to just stumble upon someone with such a reputation while doomscrolling X.

@jtimsuggs Also can we talk about the fact that his droid is part of the ship, basically acting like a co-pilot? First time I see something like this in SW.

This moment where Luthen Rael destroys and escapes from an Imperial Acclamator in Season One of ANDOR is still one of the coolest things to happen in that entire series IMO. Not only does it show how clever and prepared Luthen really is, but it’s also a brief moment in such a serious show where the more pulpy side of Star Wars is able to shine through brilliantly.

@rezeren_arts super nice! Loving the idea and comp! my two cents, the ship dont read that well, maight need a bit of light on side for some details and also maybe have the sails teared up or something to add some more story/drama ?

I few tips I give to students: once you have yourdiploma that's where the real challenge beggins: keep on posting on linkedin your work Keep learning and grow your contacts. Studios will more likely spot you. also dont hesitate to apply to open junior positions even without real first experience. Your portfolio makes the difference.

When you're in school for 3D or gamedev, you need to put in way more effort than you think to get a job. Doing the course work is not even remotely enough.
