TL;DR: Bitcoin and Ethereum are NOT broken. But the threat timeline just got shorter. Why it's NOT a reason to panic: โ€ข No such quantum computer exists today: current machines have thousands of qubits, not hundreds of thousands โ€ข The engineering gap between today's hardware and a cryptographically relevant quantum computer remains enormous โ€ข They didn't even publish the actual circuits, just a ZK proof that the circuits exist. If Bitcoin were already broken, they'd have shown it directly. Why it IS worth paying attention to: โ€ข This is the most credible, rigorously substantiated resource estimate to date, from a top quantum team โ€ข The responsible disclosure angle is novel, they used a Groth16 ZK proof to validate results without leaking attack details โ€ข The window for orderly PQC migration exists but is narrowing โ€ข Some chains (Algorand, QRL, Abelian) are already deploying PQC in production

๐Ÿšจ Google has sounded the quantum alarm ๐Ÿšจ Today, they released groundbreaking progress towards breaking crypto using a quantum computer. TLDR - Existing cryptography is dead. Mempool attacks are real. We must migrate to post-quantum now. Thread ๐Ÿงต

@GoogleResearch just moved the quantum threat timeline closer. Breaking 256-bit elliptic curve crypto, the foundation of internet now requires ~20x fewer resources than previously estimated. Every security roadmap built on the old numbers is now outdated.

This new paper from Google & Stanford is a paradigm shift in both substance (prior resource estimates for Shor's algorithm for ECDLP shattered) and tone (blockchains must urgently migrate starting NOW). Let's break it down๐Ÿ‘‡ /0

Many are wondering "what Google saw" that caused them to revise their post-quantum cryptography transition deadline to 2029 last week. It was this: research.google/blog/safeguardโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ“Here is the scariest development๐Ÿ“ We thought quantum attacks could take months, meaning transactions were safe and only 1/3 of BTC were at risk. Now a quantum computer could crack private keys in 9 mins. Bitcoinโ€™s avg block time is 10 mins. Mempool attacks just became real.
