@FlightPlanPod Successful clubs know that development is far more important than draft picks. Every player drafted has talent, especially the high-end picks where most clubs all agree anyway. The difference is what those players become when they get to the club

Essendon's list is in a precarious position after failing to nail two first round draft picks in consecutive years (Hobbs & Tsatas), leaving a void in the playing group. When things aren't going well at the club, it becomes a vicious, seemingly never-ending cycle that's hard to envisage getting out of. However, that self-destructive streak can be broken. Brisbane in 2013 faced one of the worst offseasons in club history, with the 'go-home five' requesting trades after a poor season for the Lions, culminating in Michael Voss being sacked. The go-home five were: *2010: Jared Polac at 5, Patrick Karnezis at 25 *2011: Billy Longer at 5, Sam Docherty at 12, Elliot Yeo at 30 Ostensibly it was rock bottom for Brisbane, and after an ill-fated appointment of Justin Leppitsch from 2014 to 2016, a dramatic paradigm shift had to happen. In 2017 the club appointed Chris Fagan, bringing stability and experience to a coaches box in desperate need of both. In that time frame the Lions drafted well, made astute trades and became a destination club for free agents. Brisbane laid out the blueprint for turning a floundering club into a powerhouse - something Essendon should look at very closely ❤️🖤

An interview with an Irishman in 1962. Absolutely brilliant. "Irish people have gone all over the world, it'd be bad if they were discriminated against in the countries they went to, why should we discriminate anyone coming in here then?"

@PatrickRyen @FootyLock6 Year on year imporvement of individual players just hasn't happened. We can all debate the state of our list, but if the game plan is this dysfunctional and players aren't improving depsite doubling the coaching staff, then there are other issues at play

Something I don’t agree with: The team performing poorly means everything off field is wrong. I think we’ve improved our list management, S&C (better late than never), executives, some off field standards. I just think we’ve got a couple of things to improve, and it’s on field

@FlightPlanPod TBF Ben Rutten had a similar injury year in 2022 and only half as many staff and assistant coaches to help him; and he was shown no leeway. He also had something Brad doesn't have, a prior track record of establishing an elite defence

Brad Scott has been an asset to Essendon off the field. He's made a strong attempt to build culture, lift standards and get our great club back to its best. However, whilst we've made strides in the right direction off the park, Brad was hired to coach, and that's been disastrous since mid 2025. Yes, the mitigating factor of an unprecedented injury crisis does garner leeway, but the lack of willingness for 'leaders' (either via name or stature) to knuckle down, set the tone, elevate the player standards from the group and negotiate the maelstrom as an united front has been downright diabolical. Based on the first two games, there seems to be a communication breakdown between the coaches and players. A factor that precedes almost every AFL coach dismissal. Some very frank discussions are happening behind closed doors. If the board cannot see Brad Scott as the man who's best equipped to overcome the maelstrom, we need to act swiftly and begin the search for a motivated coach that really gets it. No more half measures

@TheBackPocketAU What would you have done when a senior assistant coach departs on the eve of the season? This occured when all other clubs (as per the collctive bargaining agreement established by the coaches association) had locked in their assistant coaches for the 2026 season?

On the weekend Essendon only had 3 players from 22-25 on the field. Their injury list includes Redman, Ridley and Martin - arguably three of their best five or ten players - as well as Clarke, Bryan, Sharp and Setterfield.

A year ago I wrote about Brad Scott & Essendon, I still believe much of it to be true. Biggest problem they now face is their inability to let go of 2000 & 2012, and the fact they keep appointing the Old Guard to positions of power. Read about it here: thebackpocketau.substack.com/p/what-is-a-pa…

If you piece together what Cal had said (wish eddie would've shutup & let him finish) + what Langers said today: If i have it right the players have been coached to defend one way but onfield some players did differently. Causing both systems to fail and the ensuing confusion.
Footy on Nine@FootyonNine

"A key discussion point was confusion and lack of clarity on the way these players are defending and being coached to defend." @CalTwomey has more details on Essendon's 'players only' meeting after their horror loss to Port Adelaide. #9FootyClassified | Watch on 9 & 9Now 🖥️

@wheelreinvent @HawkerMatty1701 @AntonyGreenElec actually no, it favours minor parties and independents somewhat, who otherwise could never muster obver 50% of the vote call that corrupt if you like, or not, but for the opposite reason to what you say

@wheelreinvent @AntonyGreenElec Preferences are a reflection of what voters prefer (duh) You need >50% to win a seat, if no-one gets that, then preferences choose which alternative people can live with, even if it's not their first choice I'm yet to see a better system in single seat based Parliament

@Miss_Ruby11 @kebab_chris @NoticerNews The decision was made 1st March 2022 and was recommended by the then Minister Angus Taylor. It's technically true that the sale wasn't finalised until after the election, so it "could" have been stopped. But most governments won't ever undo a prior commitment to another country

Essendon needs to look around the league and figure out who could be to them what Luke Hodge was to Brisbane — an experienced player who can be an on-field leader and teach the young players what a winning culture looks like, because I know Parish, Merrett and co don't know.
BigRick@BigRick555

I said it at the time and I’ll say it again Essendon should’ve traded for Jack Steele purely and simply for his leadership and to example he would lead on work rate I get it doesn’t fit in with a rebuild bye we have 0 on field leaders

Harsh or Fair? Brayden Fiorini's first games in the red & black have been underwhelming to say the least. There's a grace period for new recruits, but given the club placed him in the leadership group, he needed to be much better as a player & as an on-field leader. Thoughts?

@Peter_Fitz There are not yet enough old car batteries to develop a full scale secondary market, but re-purposing old car batteries to household use is quite easy, and occurs in some more advanced markets. All that's lacking in Australia is the supply of older batteries

The problem will be what? Current projections are my battery will last for another decade or so, making it, say, 18 years. At current cost to replace, about $20K. Amortised, my battery cost = $1K a year, and they're also developing ways to rejig disused car batteries to solar.

@Lex_Jurgen @CitizenCohn @WIRED most people can get 150kms range cgarging from a normal power point overnight, no fancy charger required a plug-in hybrid gets full charge that way if you charge your car like your phone, 95% of people have no issue and rarely (if ever) need a fast charge

@CitizenCohn @WIRED I'd settle for normal EV charging being compatible with standard household wiring. If most EV owners could slow-charge overnight at home, that'd take care of a huge number of them without the need for supercharging, and use electricity overnight when the grid is less burdened.

@AnthP_ I go every week, but stopped being emotionally invested a couple of years ago when I saw no prospect of improvement I think the plan is to improve to be a consistent 50-50 side that beats the bottom handful and doesn't challenge anyone any good, and maybe finishes 10th in 2029

@NoticerNews Both parties are at fault for not meeting the minimum reserve requirements. We *should* be fine… however Labor put a climate activist in charge of the fuel supply task force so maybe this is actually all intended for their wet dream of phasing out fossil fuels.
