It's sad that this photo seems to be defining Roger Scruton in retrospect. We shouldn't forget, he was a good man, very intelligent, courageous, and had a beautiful way with words. Unfortunately, he had the standard conservative weakness of being in love with principles and institutions, and finding ethnicity a rather grubby, low-grade thing that it is demeaning for someone to be interested in. But the result of that attitude was this photo, which looks like a man smiling while he drowns.

41-year-old father-of-two James Blanch was killed in a brutal attack outside MyBar cocktail bar in Bournemouth at 3am on Easter Monday. He was described by his devastated family as “the most incredible, lovable human that lit up any room with his massive smile” and an “amazing husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend”. His wife and children said they are “heartbroken beyond belief”. Dorset Police have launched a murder investigation. Five people have now been arrested.
