I started learning German years ago, initially by myself and then I got a tutor. I was very close to taking a job in Germany at one point. These days, I don't get to practice my German but when I do come to Germany, I try my best to speak. I'm in Frankfurt now. I ordered a coffee and was complimented on my pronunciation. He made sure to tell me that he understood everything I said clearly. A cool feeling...

@TinfolkTinsley @RealTraderJill Conversation is key. It forces you to think differently. Call, response and anticipation of a reply. I did a 9 day Germany trip years ago and it was a super boost to me understanding German speakers faster.

@GAFGRM Fascinating. I used to watch DW news since they speak Hoch Deutsch and it's not fast.

@wrong_speak Don't laugh. Watch QVC.de. They do not speak at conversation speed, and they repeat because they repeat the price, the attributes, the colors, etc. And, when they cook, they explain what they do. Helps with pronuonciation.

@wrong_speak I studied German in grade school and high school. Went to Berlin many years later and ordered in German. I was so proud. The waiter answered me in English. He was not impressed.

@MikeMandaville It's great. The next level is understanding them when they reply to you. The longer I'm around German speakers, the faster I can understand. Then it just becomes a vocabulary issue, since I don't speak it often I forget words.

@wrong_speak Adam that is excellent. I am in France doing the same thing! Takes work but learning the vocabulary and the pronunciation and the respect of attempting the language and working with it is key. I'm at a museum and I was complimented on my efforts. Doesn't that feel great?

@wrong_speak My German is trash. Only thing I ever got right was when my granddad took us to Europe (I was about 8) and I ordered a Kaffee mit Schlagsahne und eine Sachertorte. It was delicious.
