I was invited to appear on the Moral Maze this evening but then I learned that Ash Sarkar, a self-declared communist, would be on the panel. Having interviewed women who were taken from their homes in the middle of the night, pushed onto cattle wagons to be dumped in Siberia and others who were tortured or whose families were killed - all in the name of this ideology - I withdrew. Would the BBC have a fascist as one of their panellists? For me, a communist is no better than a fascist.

The uprising in Iran in early January suggested an even greater insurgency would then follow on the U.S.-Israeli campaign to erode regime power. Yet, the populace now appears cowed into near-silence. This ranks as the most surprising and disappointing development of the past week. Without a new uprising, the regime will likely remain in power, less powerful but more awful than ever. I was reading y'day Stalin's report to the XVII congress of CPU(b) in 1934. It is called the Congress of Victors. Stalin's report is chuck-full of economic statistics. Almost nothing else ("socialism in one country"). Most numbers are given as ratios, so they might have been manipulated or exaggerated But even in that speech Stalin accepts large declines in livestock caused by "kulaks" slaughter of pigs, horses, cows etc. in order not to lose them to kolkhozes. The declines are huge: between 1/2 and 2/3. No surprise there were huge shortages of meat & famine. marxists.org/reference/arch…
