With Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell now out, Republicans are down two votes. Good. They can no longer obstruct, enable, or keep propping up the dysfunction Donald Trump has turned this country into. But don’t come at me with “have some respect for the dead” or “bless their hearts.” Trump set this bar years ago and dragged it straight into the gutter. He didn’t mourn Robert Mueller. He posted “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!” He didn’t offer condolences for Rob Reiner. He twisted it into another rant calling it “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and made the whole thing about himself, even dragging in wild claims about Reiner’s family. That’s the standard he chose. When it’s his enemies, it’s open season and celebration. When it’s Republicans, suddenly everyone’s supposed to pretend we’re all still operating on the old rules of basic human decency. Obama and Biden gave actual condolences when political opponents passed. Trump gloats, mocks, and makes it a victory lap. Human decency is supposed to start at the top. Instead we got a president who enjoys it when the people who crossed him or did their jobs die because they had different opinions or were in his way. This isn’t normal. It’s a cult that’s been normalized. The hatred, the vitriol, the way we now treat political deaths like score-settling. That’s his legacy. He wanted to win so badly, be loved so badly, and run the same grift he’s run his whole life (bankruptcies, failed steaks, failed wine, the Apprentice illusion) that he was willing to burn the shared standards of the country to do it. So yeah, people are going to cheer when Graham and McConnell are gone. And when Trump’s day comes, they’re going to celebrate even louder. That’s the exact energy he spent years pouring into everyone else. We’re the ones still alive. We’re the ones who still have to live in the broken system he helped create. Nothing changes until the people who enabled this are voted out.
