I wonder if instead of “profit” we said “breathing space” the chancellor would have made different decisions about leaning on employer NICs to get the tax she wants. Does Govt think “profit” = “extra fat pay for bosses”, rather than as “ability to plan for next year”?

@DPJHodges Only 808 respondents and the poll has itself said it has a 3.4% margin of error.

The thing about the Selzer poll is it’s not just an outlier in Iowa. No other poll at any point in the cycle anywhere - either nationally or at state level - has shown anything like a comparable swing from Trump to Harris.

@ShakeyStephens @PeaChannon @bmay @BraidseaQuine @Benrrowland Trying to clarify succinctly: NICs rises do not affect what many small business pay their apprentices per se, but it makes their whole business model precarious, so they are cutting employees not yet covering their own costs, like apprentices. Varies hugely by sector btw.

Here is the CEO of the Association of Employment & Learning Providers, an education specialist and highly regarded author on apprenticeships. I don’t think he’s a Tory either. They’ve messed up.

NEW DfE accounts suggest Government raised c£829m more from the apprenticeship levy than it spent on apprenticeships in 23-24. Levy raising more as nominal wages rise, DfE apprenticeship budget not raised in line, limiting numbers & funding rates. H/t @mbcorney

@JonathanBrash … and independent training providers who deliver 40k 16-19 places each year too, often to the most disadvantaged and disengaged young people. Agree very positive news and the right decision. Look forward to more news on this coming tomorrow.

We welcome the launch of Skills England today. Our challenge to government is to ensure Skills England puts employers and providers at the heart of decision making. This is a time to be ambitious. Read our full response here: aelp.org.uk/news/employers…

Skills England will unite businesses, unions, mayors & training providers to find and fill skills gaps, strengthening our economy, supporting people into rewarding jobs. It's about growing our economy. It's about helping people get on in life. It's pro-business and pro-worker.

Using the term “Training Providers’ recognises the sector isn’t just academic education institutions, but Independent Training Providers many of which deliver alternative provision to vocational learners. I’m thrilled this is being recognised 🥳 @bphillipsonMP

@bphillipsonMP The exciting thing is that a series of small changes, developed with key employer bodies and providers, can turbo charge our skills provision for employers and learners. Skills England doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel, just work with people at the frontline who know.

Fab to see @DarrenLeeAvery getting an opportunity to share with @JamesAsser and @Jacqui_Smith1 what apprenticeships have helped @Ldn_Ambulance achieve with their critically important workforce. Bit more flex on Skills Bootcamps could help fill even more technical roles too though
James Asser MP@JamesAsser

Last week I joined education minister @Jacqui_Smith1 at the @Ldn_Ambulance excellent education & control room facilities in the Royal Docks. It was great to hear from apprentices on the award-winning programme & see the training in action. #RoyalDocks #Newham #WestHamAndBeckton
