The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) exists as a tool for the public to hold elected officials in government accountable by granting us the right to access information that would have otherwise remained private. Citizens who leverage the FOIA act help foster an environment of accountability and transparency within government agencies and facilitate public discourse.
Last week @ShellyBradbury of @denverpost , with support from @LAColacioppo , made the decision to weaponize FOIA and doxed me and 2 other women for passing information we obtained through Colorado’s guarantee of FOIA to an anonymous account.
In her article Shelly included a quote from @PatFerrucci, chair of the Department of Journalism at the University of Colorado Boulder, regarding journalists. He said "They can disseminate important information, and that's great. But that's only a piece of what journalism does. Journalism often puts that information into context, which makes it more useful for people."
Shelly’s article failed to put the documents we obtained into context, skirting the advice of the very same professor she quoted. Because of her failure to frame our public records requests in context, our involvement with DoBetterDNVR was misleading at best.
Nuance matters in journalism and Shelly couldn't have been less interested in it. Her article showed nothing but an utter lack of curiosity, something I thought was a journalist's most valuable trait.
For a week I have read utterly vile commentary about myself and the other two women who were doxed because of Shelly’s decision to mischaracterize our involvement in DoBetterDNVR and include personal information that served no real journalistic value. It would be an understatement to say I am disappointed in the unethical journalism that took place here.
Thank you so much to everyone who publicly showed support for the three of us, I cannot put into words how grateful I am for that.
All I ask is that going forward, we do our best to offer kindness. While I don't support what @ShellyBradbury and @denverpost did, I do request we stay kind in holding them accountable.
