@10YearsLRuk

10 years of life. One policy change. No protection. We’re calling for a fair transition for those already on the UK 10-year Long Residence route to ILR.

In the last few weeks the Home Secretary has announced the biggest & most restrictive reforms to our asylum & immigration system leaving people in limbo with the prospect of enforced evictions. She's done this without a debate or vote. Tomorrow I will lead a debate on her reforms

Our lobbying efforts are gaining traction! Today, the Home Affairs Committee has published their report and recommended that our cohort be given transitional arrangements: “The changes should not be applied to people in the UK who arrived before 2021 and would under the current rules be on track to settle in the UK through a 10-year-route” You can read the full report through this link: committees.parliament.uk/committee/83/h… 🔗‼️

Thank you for securing this debate. Migrants on the 10-year Long Residence route (Appendix LR) are being completely overlooked. Many of us have already spent a decade legally living, studying and working in the UK. Under the Earned Settlement proposals we could face 10 more years before settlement. Please raise our voices in Parliament. We’d love to have a chat with you if that’s possible #ImmigrationReform #LongResidence #EarnedSettlement

I have secured the first debate in Parliament on the Government's awful and appalling immigration reforms. Significant numbers of Labour backbenchers have voiced their concern about their impact. This is their chance to join us to get the Gov't to back down

We have reached 1,000 signatures! Thanks to everyone who’s already supported our petition, and for the media coverage (@Independent , @ScotNational …) that’s helped amplify our voices. But we are not stopping here. We need at least 10,000 signatures to trigger a Government response and protect the 10-year Long Residence route. 📢 Add your voice today! Every signature counts. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/7517… #LongResidence #ImmigrationJustice #Petition #MakeOurVoicesHeard

@ReuniteDivFamil Hiya! Reaching out from the Long Residence Advocacy Group a volunteer- & migrant-led network supporting people nearing settlement under the long residence route (Appendix LR). We really appreciate the vital work you do for migrant families. The proposed earned settlement model would devastate our members, and our voices have been largely absent from the debate due to small numbers. We’d be really happy to connect if helpful. Thanks! P

With many UK universities already under serious financial pressure, restricting the Long Residence (LR) route - which allows Student visa years to count toward settlement - risks making the UK far less attractive to international talent. As highlighted in the recent House of Lords by Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle @natalieben , nearly half of UK universities are projected to face a deficit next year, with warnings that up to 50 institutions could be at risk of closure. We are already seeing consolidation pressures, including the recent merger between the University of Kent and the University of Greenwich - and more could follow if these reforms proceed. International students are vital to our economy, research base, and global competitiveness. Short-term migration optics shouldn’t come at the expense of long-term strength. We urge the Labour Government to rethink. #LongResidence #InternationalStudents #HigherEducation

Half of UK universities face a deficit next year. Up to 50 could close. That is a sector in crisis. Simply blaming a tuition fee freeze and nudging fees up with inflation is not a plan. Where is the long-term strategy for higher education? #Universities #HigherEducation | @UCU

I’m campaigning against unfair changes to Indefinite Leave to Remain. I delivered a letter to the Home Office signed by @AndreaEganGS, 70+ parliamentarians and 33 civil society groups. These plans will divide communities and damage services. Ministers must think again.

Our cohort continues to be largely overlooked in the immigration discourse. I want to shed light on the fact that many of our members who are on the 10-year Long Residence route arrived in the UK as children themselves, not as dependants but as individuals who have grown up, studied, and built their lives here. Under the current proposals, this lawful route that require 10 year of residence is set to be “superseded”, placing people who have already spent close to a decade in the UK into renewed uncertainty, with years at risk of being reset and no clear transitional protections. For those who arrived as children, this is not a theoretical policy change. It affects the only home many of us know, undermining stability, belonging, and the futures we have worked towards by following the rules in good faith.

We integrated. We paid in. We followed the rules, for a decade. All of us entered the system before 2021 (Pre-Boris Wave), under the rules that existed then. If the government now says settlement should take 10 years, fair enough. But many of us have already done that, so why should we be asked to do another 10? Changing the rules after the fact is unfair and damaging. Transitional protections aren’t optional, they’re essential. @ShabanaMahmood, @MikeTappTweets and the @UKLabour government owe long-residency migrants clear answers, and fair transitional protections.
