In southern Arizona yesterday, I asked a Trump supporter if it bothered him that Trump was personally enriching himself off of his presidency. He right away went down the “But Biden! But Obama!” road. When I gave him the actual numbers, the unprecedented, obscene billions that Trump is making (numbers he was not aware of) he paused and quietly said “That’s not good. That bothers me.” I thanked him for his honesty.

He’s not a natural politician. The same common sense conservatism that makes him an effective leader for his constituents seems to be his Achilles heel nationally. A tragic irony. I fear our only hope is for things to get bad enough that people stop voting on bullshit and start voting like adults.

Nobody believes that it’s a good idea, or makes any rational sense, to award citizenship to the babies of illegal immigrants. Nobody believes that the Founders ever intended any of this. This is one of those times where the debate is a facade. The other side doesn’t believe their own bullshit. They know this is ruinous for the country. That’s why they’re so elated. As for the Constitution, they couldn’t care less.
