@Ethen87 That's a 20 year chart. Trim it to just five years and the original is exactly what you see

Yesterday many “experts” told you we were headed for nuclear war & spent the entire day losing their minds. Today the Dow opens up 1300+ points, S&P rises nearly 3%, & oil has dropped $20 a barrel. As always, it pays to be rational. Congrats to those who didn’t lose their minds.

As the U.S. enters enormously consequential negotiations with Iran to end the war, please keep in mind that the Iranian regime has broken just about every treaty it has ever signed.

@senatorshoshana Selection bias. Too many people watch the early seasons keeping the average down, and anyone watching the later seasons clearly lacks discernment.

Genuinely might be only a few tens of thousands who followed that precise trajectory. Straight party voters are knocked out immediately and that's most people. Then they went in the opposite direction of the overall national swing several times.

People going "Wait, so your parents voted McGovern, Ford, Carter, Mondale, Bush, Bush, Dole, Gore, and Kerry?" delight me. Yeah. My parents voted like total crazy people. I'm sure @NateSilver538 or someone could run an analysis of how rare such voters must have been.
Sir Humphrey 🇺🇦@bdquinn

An addendum, my parents had an amazing voting record. From 1972 through 2004 they voted for only one presidential election winner and that was George HW Bush in 1988. Swing voters, but almost always against national trends.

@CriticalZaku @JohnAdelman6 @SeanTrende You can't rely on that in a system where the President has a veto. It's a ratchet where Congress always loses and the President is consistently and improvidently empowered.

@JohnAdelman6 @SeanTrende My point still stands. The judiciary’s role isn’t to save Congress from itself. The problem with major questions is it inserts itself even when Congress absolutely DID intend to give up its powers, as with the IEEPA. If Congress needs to fix the law they should fix the law.

The thing about the tariff case is the Trump admin’s case isn’t frivolous. Everyone understands you can regulate things through taxes. Thats a big part of the reason we tax cigarettes so heavily! The problem they run into is a modern, almost certainly correct 1/

@trumwill The concept is right, but both scales have a misnumbered end. Fahrenheit correctly places 100, Celsius is right about zero. 50% is 66°, which is, in fact, exactly medium.

I think like a lot of trends, there may well be an underlying core of a real thing along with an avalanche of not actually related things. And there are lots of things we don’t know about medical ailments. So lots of times I’m willing to think someone has something, but they labeled it under the trendy thing because we don’t know what it is.

So I gotta revise and extend my remarks. I’m for building a bigger, more powerful navy. I think creating a “Trump class” of ships is more sad vanity from Trump. But I was foolishly working under the assumption that this was a ship in the works already and was deemed necessary. That doesn’t seem to be the case. Using Trump’s vanity to improve the military is what I had in mind. Wasting resources in service to his vanity, hard pass.
Jonah Goldberg@JonahDispatch

If this is the price of building new battleships that’s totally fine with me.

@neoavatara Even after accepting the bs distraction the right offers up in response to this, your comments are full of the most vile people they have to offer. Playing along with their false equivocation gains you nothing.

If you praise Nazis and Hitler, you shouldn't have a future in politics. If you state a desire to shoot your political enemies, you shouldn't have a future in politics. This is not hard, people.

@AlexNowrasteh I think there is an issue when you are dealing with a policy that is partly determined by expectations. It is easy to say it's a bad policy proposal from the outside (and it is), but sometimes the goals are more achievable when leaders credibly commit to seek bad policies

I *can* understand supporting Harris. I can’t understand being an economist who supports Harris while feeling the need to be extremely misleading about her support for price controls. Just be honest. Why can’t people say, “I support him/her, but he/she is wrong here”?

I love that almost every episode of seasons 1-2 of Who’s the Boss revolve around Tony and Angela falling in love. They should have gotten them together in season 3 and then ended the show 😂
