The civilizational achievement Miller is pointing to was substantially built by immigrants. Wernher von Braun, the architect of the Saturn V rocket that carried Americans to the moon, was born in Germany and came to the United States as part of Operation Paperclip after World War II. The Apollo program’s scientific infrastructure drew heavily on European refugees, Jewish scientists who fled Nazi persecution, and immigrant engineers from across the continent. The Hart-Celler Act - the 1965 immigration reform that opened the door to non-European immigration - was signed four years before the moon landing. The moon landing happened anyway. The post-Apollo contraction in American space exploration wasn’t caused by immigration policy. Nixon cut NASA’s budget. The Cold War space race ended. Funding dropped from 4.4% of the federal budget in 1966 to under 1% by the mid-1970s. That’s the documented cause. What followed the supposed civilizational derailment Miller describes: the internet, GPS, MRI technology, the human genome project, mRNA vaccines, the smartphone, and the AI systems his colleagues are now deploying to run the government. Much of it built by immigrant scientists and engineers. The argument assumes a causal chain the evidence doesn’t support and attributes an effect to a cause that doesn’t fit the timeline.
