@NorCalU1 Talked to a coach friend of mine today. Great coach. Played pro ball. His plan for 14u (all 8th graders) - practice 3x per week and then transform to 2x and a scrimmage on Friday nights. No tournaments, no weekend games. I thought that sounded PERFECT.

After a lot of reflecting this last week, WTF HAS HAPPENED TO YOUTH BASEBALL? The priorities are so out of whack I don’t know where to start, but I’m going to start. Going to ask for help from some good people. There are better answers out there.

@MiLBMariners Another level? He’s played 2 games and has 5 assists. Also, his defense has been below average both of the last 2 years. Emerson is a plus defender at SS with 14 errors in over 1363 innings his last 2 years in the minors (A+-AAA). Celesten has 47 errors in 1475 innings.

Felnin Celesten has played a very good shortstop all year but he’s been on another level since his promotion to Arkansas. Great play.

Parents, here’s a simple rule: Don’t talk to the opposing team’s kids. Cheer for your own team. Let the coaches coach, the players play, and the umpires umpire. You’re behind the fence for a reason.

@CoachSwit As a parent of a 13U player, I've become salty over the travel ball model. My son's been fortunate play in a good program with good coaching, but the model of playing these weekend tournaments for a $2 medal is crap. Practice practice practice and friendly double headers.

Has youth baseball become more of a business than it is about player development and having fun? 25 years ago, it felt like the game came first. Today, it often feels like showcases, rankings, travel fees, and recruiting come first. Has the balance shifted too far? Thoughts?
