@7Kiwi What difference would it make? Oil & gas produced is owned by the licensee. They sell it to the highest bidder on the international markets. How does that improve our energy security? Are you being paid to tweet this arrant nonsense. It’s the best explanation I can think of

Moments like this tell you about leadership. Energy security is national security and you're not doing anything to increase domestic supply. Why not overrule Miliband to fast track Jackdaw & Rosebank? Why not lift the bans on exploration drilling and fracking? Weak. Weak. Weak.
Keir Starmer@Keir_Starmer

Moments like this tells you about leadership. The Tories and Reform would have rushed us into the conflict in the Middle East without thinking through the consequences it would have for British people. My Labour government will always make decisions in the national interest.

The only industry that profits whether it works or not. Wind farms get guaranteed prices through subsidies. Then get compensated when they’re told to switch off. Meanwhile we have some of the highest energy bills in the world. It’s a racket. Who’s getting rich off our bills?”
Department for Energy Security and Net Zero@energygovuk

Sometimes there is too much wind for our outdated grid to handle, especially in Scotland and the East of England. Rather than paying wind farms to switch off we’re trialling a new system where people who live near these constrained areas get cheaper - or even free - electricity.

@policylaila We have the highest electricity prices in Europe because we depend on expensive gas generation. It increases household electricity bills by 300 per year. Effectively a subsidy to the oil & gas sector of 9 billion which is matched by increased costs to business.

@TypeForVictory @LoftusSteve A forward contract doesn't make gas cheap, it just makes it predictable. If the global market price for gas is high due to a war in the Middle East, your "forward contract" will just lock in that high price for a year. It doesn't protect you from the underlying cost of the fuel.

This is where everyone is mistaken. Wind and solar do not "break the link" because you still need thermal dispatchable power to back them up. Wind and solar are only temporary displacement technology. You are still tied to gas markets either way.
Liz Webster@LizWebsterSBF

🔴 Stella Creasy nails it 👏 You can’t say our energy system has left us vulnerable… and then oppose the only things that actually make us independent. Oil and gas tie us to global markets. Renewables break that link. It really is that simple.

The Jackdaw field alone could provide the equivalent of 250 million barrels of oil in natural gas, and could be up and running by Christmas. But because of Ed Miliband and the Labour Party it is stuck in limbo. Keeping us ever more reliant on imports. Madness.

@gilesobryen @renewablesmiffy @latimeralder @Giarc1982_2 They don’t just play fast & loose with the data, they also pretend that Net Zero is something it isn’t. Net Zero isn’t just solar & wind, it’s all of the low carbon energy sources, plus energy efficiency, storage etc But they pretend it’s just wind & solar, to fool the gullible

The standard answer from UK NetZeroers is that British prices are high because they're tied to gas by government policy But they never explain why successive governments haven't just changed the policy to lower bills at a stroke. Unless, perhaps, that's not the real reason at all?
Latimer Alder@latimeralder

The key Net Zero chart that every campaigner must explain. And can't! No matter what pricing model your country has, no matter the precise makeup of its grid, no matter its other resources, the more wind and solar you have, the more expensive your electricity Please share

@bkava @7Kiwi The average salary of an offshore oil and gas worker is £62,000. That’s effectively being subsidized by the £300 a year every household pays extra because we depend on expensive gas generation. Everything you think you know about energy costs is wrong.

@7Kiwi Don’t lie Davy lad. It’s gas which sets our electricity prices & that’s adding £300 to every households bill. Offshore oil & gas workers are amongst the highest paid jobs in the UK averaging £62k per year, which are effectively being subsidized by each households excess bills.

@gilesobryen @latimeralder @Giarc1982_2 The chart is easy to explain, it uses selective data to mislead people. He doesn’t include Norway, Brazil who are in the high 90s for low carbon generation & have lower than avg electricity prices. Nor dues he include Turkey on 45% with 4p per KWh prices or Paraguay 99.7% & 4p.

@Giarc1982_2 @latimeralder @latimeralder is a liar. He used old figures for China. Their renewable % is roughly 2X what he has on the chart. He excluded states like Norway & Brazil. They have over 90% renewables & 7-9 p/KWh prices There’s no point arguing with him, he’s funded by the fossil fuel sector

@latimeralder Which govt? The Tories botched privatizing the Energy market selling off BritOil, creating a highly fragmented energy market with a large number of players. They also inflicted Brexit on us & allowed Rough to close. How could bills be lowered at a stroke? Re-nationalization!

@stuartpowell @annette5200 This is lie! The average wind turbine recovers the CO2 used in its construction in 6 months. A Gas Power Plant never recovers the CO2 used in its construction unless it includes CO2 capture which increases the it’s cost, the cost of the Energy it produces & its CO2 footprint

@latimeralder @MJGhacv The problem is that the oil and gas fields we haven’t exploited yet have much higher extraction costs. It’s one of the reasons why we haven’t exploited them yet.

Where does Britain get its energy from? 39% from oil 32% from gas 10% from wind and a few odds and sods. This may come as a shock to renewables fans. Be gentle with them. It upsets their world view

@MJGhacv @latimeralder It’s pointless arguing with him. He’s paid to promote fossil fuels. That’s why his graph doesn’t include countries like Norway, Brazil etc which have very high renewable % and low electricity costs.

@latimeralder @MJGhacv Why no stats for Norway, Brazil, Paraguay. You chap are a lying little toerag. If you put them on your dodgy graph you would have a number of countries in the bit of the graph you claim there are none. Norway, 99% renewable 8p a KWh. Brazil and Paraguay similar.

@TiceRichard @annette5200 The price of US natural gas (not exported) is low, the price of US LPG (exported) isn’t. Unfortunately any gas we produce is sold on via gas trading hubs where the price is set by the international markets. Pumping more gas won’t make gas cheaper in the UK.

DRILL BRITAIN DRILL Delusional Red Ed Miliband has again misled the Commons. He will not answer why price of gas in US is just 1/3rd of UK gas…. Seemingly because it completely undermines his whole argument about Net Stupid Zero. We must maximise use of our own energy treasure of oil and gas.

Question for wind fans: 200 years ago EVERY commercial and military ship on Earth was wind-powered. Now NONE of them are Why did the shipping industry, wind's greatest user, turn against it so comprehensively and so quickly? Did something better come along? Can Turner help?
