Annual mammograms are recommended as "preventative" care for women over 40. Even for women who have no family history of breast cancer. We don't even need a doctor's order. We can just call and make an appointment to get one done, and our insurance covers it. So, many women who have no family history follow the "preventative" care guideline and subject healthy breast tissue to radiation year after year. Sometimes doing it every six months. I understand that mammograms have detected breast cancer early and helped save lives. But, due to the radiation, it is believed that with repeated mammograms, out of every 1 woman saved from cancer, 9 women will develop breast cancer. Women who would've not developed breast cancer at all had they not gotten the mammograms. That is the risk women take. And the more mammograms a woman gets, the higher the risk. I had a mammogram once. They told me that they saw a few very small "spots" on one of my breasts. They said that my tissue was too dense and they needed to do an ultrasound to "get a better look." If the ultrasound gives them a better look and it doesn't subject me to radiation, why not do that to begin with? They did the ultrasound and told me the spots were nothing to worry about, but they wanted me to come back in 6 months for a repeat mammogram. I asked, "Why a mammogram? Why not just a repeat ultrasound?" They had no solid answer and just said that a mammogram was required before any other testing could be done. That was over five years ago. I never went back. I don't believe mammograms are necessary. They disrupt healthy breast tissue, put the woman at a higher risk of developing cancer, and can give false positives, which further increases the risk of cancer by disrupting breast tissue with invasive procedures like a biopsy. If women have a family history of breast cancer or they find a lump, etc, a mammogram can be useful. But there are other preventative ways to check breast tissue that don't put the woman at risk of developing cancer. The sad thing is, those other ways need a doctor's order and are sometimes not even covered by insurance unless a woman first subjects herself to a mammogram.

@kcrrod In the 1950s the wisdom of the day said you should make sure the baby isn't hungry, dry diaper, and then just put them in another room and let them cry so as not to spoil them. My mom found her sister in law doing this and was horrified.

There’s also another side to this: Your baby is not going to die if you put them down for a moment to take a shower. They won’t be traumatized if you are not holding & looking at them 24/7. Stop losing yourselves in your infants/tots & do research so you don’t hurt development!
bunnie@CuriousBunnie12

if you’re a mom on here talking about how you don’t shower for 72 hours straight, can’t change your clothing, can’t perform basic hygiene because your baby is just inconsolably attached at your hip, im going to assume that your husband absolutely hates you

@angieunexpected @muheediva01 Unfortunately, most elderly parents don't appreciate the profound love and sacrifice. They're just cranky and resent losing their independence. Some days they don't want your help, but they have no choice. Other days they complain when you don't help enough. Never satisfied.

With kids, you get to participate in the growth, learning and guide them. You get the indescribable joys of seeing and hearding their first words, steps , kisses etc. Caring for a elderly ill parent, is also a great honor that should be cherished too, on a different level. In their weakened state, they get to witness a profound love, of caring, sacrifice and protection until their end. My mom said, “once an adult, two times a child.”

Hot take: taking care of elderly ill parents is harder than taking care of and raising kids.

@Amazingjason2 @bannon1975 My son was smart but hated reading. He always said the AR tests were multiple choice and you could usually get the question right by choosing the politically correct answer.

@bannon1975 AR allowed kids to choose books matching their interests. The test checked to see if they read and understood it. This seems like a good setup to me.

The Accelerated Reader quiz didn't ask if you loved the book. It asked if you remembered it accurately enough to score points. A child could finish a story that changed their life and walk away with a 60%. A child could game every question and never read a word. 21% of American adults are functionally illiterate. We built a system that measured reading and forgot to measure readers. Source: National Literacy Institute

@mademoiselle_kw @garonnevik I've lived on a farm for 64 years, and I've never seen a cat population multiply like this. Outdoor cats usually live only 2-3 years.

@garonnevik Heard. But cats can get out of control after just one year. You also don’t want inbred cats.

I’m probably opening up a can of worms here, but to those saying I need to spay my cats, consider a few things. We are a grain farm. Grain farms attract rodents. Hundreds of them. Big ones. We can use cats, or we can use more chemicals to handle them. Your choice. Humane societies refuse to give cats to farms. They claim cats are not for work, they are for domestic use only. I have tried. So we have to breed our own, and farmers have a whole network to manage this. We take excellent care of our cats. They are handled and loved. But we are not the city. We are not a neighborhood. We are a rural farm trying to keep our chemical and disease levels low.

@garonnevik The cats also keep the snakes away from our farm yard by killing off the rodent population. (We have rattle snakes in our area)

@beyondwaiting Where I live, the closest doctor to deliver a baby is 1 1/2 hours away. All pregnant women in our town have to travel that far to have their baby.

Ladies, if your fingernails are completely bare (no polish, acrylics, etc.) give this a “like”. My daughter is convinced that “everyone” has fake nails or a manicure and I’m the odd man out. She’s 12. 😄

@5genfarmer_ @lambtonworm3 @bellabee13 Correct, not everything has happened in your lifetime. But the idea that serving guests dinner is a NEW convention is just absurdly silly. Your personal experience doesn’t make something true.

@grlfrmboston @bellabee13 I had a cake and punch wedding. Over 100 people came in the middle of a snow storm to witness our vows and wish us well. They came to see US, not for the punch. That was 41 years ago, and we're still married.
