@nettermike Doc was the best part of my 3/c cruise on SSBN 625. He took all of us midn (5 total) under his wing. He was easy to talk to and didn't constantly remind us we were the lowest form of life on the boat. He had to handle a Chief with appendicitis on that patrol.

Imagine being stuck 800 feet underwater, thousands of miles from land, and your appendix bursts. If you think a Navy helicopter is going to drop a surgeon down to save you, think again. On a US Navy submarine, there are no doctors. Instead, the entire crew’s survival rests on the shoulders of one single person: a senior medic affectionately called "Doc." Officially, their title is Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC), but to the crew, they are the most respected person on the boat. To get this job, these sailors have to survive one of the most brutal and intense medical training pipelines in the entire military. The Navy basically crams years of medical school, trauma care, and pharmacology into a grueling, fast-paced course designed to turn them into a one-man emergency room. Once the submarine dives, Doc is completely on their own. There is no nurse to help, no pharmacist to check dosages, and no surgeon looking over their shoulder. They have to do it all. On any given day, Doc is diagnosing weird rashes, treating infections, stitching up deep cuts, and acting as the boat’s dentist by pulling teeth or filling cavities. But it gets even crazier. Because they are living on a floating nuclear reactor, Doc is also responsible for the ship’s radiation health. They constantly monitor the sub's air quality, water supply, and oxygen levels to make sure the environment isn't slowly killing the crew. If a true, life-or-death medical nightmare happens in the middle of a deployment, Doc’s job is to stabilize the patient. They have a direct radio line to actual Navy doctors back on land who can talk them through a crisis, but when the pressure is on, it’s Doc's hands holding the scalpel. If things are too severe, the Captain will abort the mission and surface the boat for a medical evacuation, but until that hatch opens, Doc is the only line of defense. They don't wear officer bars, and they don't have a medical degree, but every submariner knows that if things go sideways in the deep, Doc is the only person who can bring them home alive.

@7tbarney7 @DavidSuslenskiy The bar has to be much, much higher than that! And there are candidates far more experienced and capable of doing that! There really is nothing in Vance’s public service record that would indicate what kind of POTUS he would be because that record is a blank slate! 😲

Whenever I watch an interview with Vance it’s so clear how much smarter, more skilled, calm, and smoother he is than Trump. Vance would be a much better president than Trump.

@Will_i_am_1207 @Post40_ I have boy/girl twins. I took them into the men's room, into a stall, and they did their business. It never occurred to me to walk into a women's restroom. Adult men do not belong there.

Question for the men in the group: do you know how to fix a tire? If you got a flat tire, would you fix it yourself or call AAA? (I do not need my tired fixed. I’m doing research.)

That All-Star game decision killed my interest in the sport. Prior to that, I subscribed to the extra innings package every year, I went to multiple games per year, and played fantasy baseball. Since then, I have had very little engagement with the sport and really haven’t missed it all that much.

It blows my mind how MLB leadership is basically run by a pack of 42-year-old women from Connecticut They cancelled the Atlanta all-star game because the Dems bitched about Georgia's pending voter laws. This fucked hundreds of black-owned businesses because the MLB thinks (as most middle-aged Yankee women do) that all business in the South is run by racist white men These idiots hate the sport they are running. They hate the fans, they hate the players. The MLB is run by a pile of idiots.

Here's why Carvana is absolutely slaughtering car dealerships: I found a truck I wanted, brand new or I would have used Carvana Called the dealer and talked to a salesman whom I know btw "Hey I found this truck I want, I've already researched, don't need to test drive, I just want to buy it" Salesman: "Ok when can you come in and test drive? " Me: "I don't need to test drive, I've driven them, this is the one I want. I'm pretty busy so is there a way to just do the paperwork digitally and do you offer delivery?" Salesman: "Sorry we'll have to have you come in for that and go through our finance office" Me: "Ok, I work every day until 5. I see you're open until 7 tonight can I just come by after work and pick it up?" Salesman: "We are open until 7 but can you be here by 5?" Me: "No, I work until 5 so it would be like 530. That should be enough time right?" Salesman: "How about Thursday the same time?" Dude I'm literally trying to throw money at you and make this the easiest sale of your life

@AlecTorelli Dude, 600k is an *astronomical* salary across the US, even in a place like Denver. You can live very well in Denver (and most places in the US) for *significantly* less than that.

Something I've been thinking a lot about lately that's very hard to admit and took me about a decade to accept. America is by far the best place to get wealthy, yet one of the worst places to enjoy one's wealth. The average family has a better quality of life taking home 60K a year in a quaint European town than 600K in even a relatively prominent city in the U.S., say Phoenix or Denver. I say this after traveling the world full time since 2005, visiting 50+ countries and living in 7, as well as all across the States.

I once lied on my CV. Confidently said during the interview that I was well conversant with excel. I got hired. 2nd day on the job my manager sends me a spreadsheet and asks me to build a pivot table by EOD. I had no idea what that meant. So I spent my whole lunch break plus a couple minutes after that eatching YouTube tutorials about it. I was sweating and trembling. I submitted the Pivot table at 5:02 PM. Wasn't perfect but manager didn't complain. From that I learnt that the gap between "I can't" and "I'll figure it out" is not as huge as you think. You can always lie in that CV and then you can learn after you are hired. A few weeks or days always enough to learn something

When I was in 9th grade we got this assignment to write a biography of someone we knew, and it was implicit, but not explicit, that it was meant to be an adult who had accomplished whatever in his or her life. I chose to do it on my friend Spencer, who was a grade ahead of me, and I included choice lines like, "Since moving her from a larger city Spencer has not found his social place and spends much of his life in his room listening to music that could be best described as inarticulate grunting" and interviewed another friend (required to interview a person who knew him) who said "I would describe Spencer's social skills as terrible beyond all description." The teacher was very annoyed, but did, to her credit, recognize she didn't say I couldn't do this. She told me that on top of it not being a good paper, she knew him, and that he wasn't like this. Meanwhile, his parents read it, and found it hilarious, and his stepdad described it as "dead on balls accurate" I saw this English teacher at a teeball game a couple of weeks ago (her grandson is on the team, I like her son and her grandson fine) and she looked over at me recognizing me (small town, she taught several parents on the team) but I didn't talk to her. I am torn on if I see her again if I should proudly tell her I am a professional writer and have a literature podcast now damn did I kill it on that paper she didn't like. As much as she hated the results, to me she really assigned something that taught me I can write. (and I got a B or whatever, despite how much she disliked it that I did the assignment properly was undeniable)

@augustagarei New house. Previous lawn service comes, mows the 2ft strip by the mailbox and down the sidewalk. Too short, looks awful. Realizes there's a new owner. Leaves rest of lawn undone. When I call to ask about it they're rude. Hired a different service.

“Did I miss the sale?” Wrong question Better question is How many more mornings are you willing to wake up tired? How many more cups of coffee are you going to use to mask poor sleep? How many more days are you going to spend operating at 70%? You found The Mattress Guy You don’t need to wait for Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, or some made-up mattress holiday The best time to fix your sleep was years ago The second-best time is today

If you have multiple units, it is probably worth treating the starter caps like fluorescent light tubes — you just replace them all on a schedule, whether they “need” it or not. Buy them in bulk, replace every 3 years. Probably lengthen the average unit working life significantly. A failed start cap stresses the compressor motor wiring, and when that goes, you are looking at a new compressor. These days that probably means a new condenser unit.
