Conditions turned sour during the day. A lot of wind (5-6 Bft) and slight rain. Let the idea of sub 37 go and just attempt a pb (38:15). My mate, and pacemaker (35 10k runner), said we will just go out at 3'40/km and see where we land. He did a stellar job, keeping a steady pace even with the gusts of wind and kept me out of the wind nicely. Managed to smash that 37 even with horrible conditions with a chip time of 36:52 😱 More later. For now, very very very happy with this performance 🚀🚀

I will be racing in the Adidas Adios Pro 4. Originally I picked up this shoe for longer runs with tempos to save my legs a bit, and was fully commited to the vaporfly 4 as my racing shoe. But over the last few months, I have had great sessions in the Adios Pro 4, and some of the session I did in the vaporfly were super challenging. I also feel my calfs are a lot more sore running in the Adios Pro 4, so it does changed something about the way I run. I don't know if it makes me more efficient but I will defintely take the placebo effects and the confidence from those hard sessions with me.

I'm racing a 10K on Friday and that means it's taper week. I hate them. The lack of exercise makes my mind go crazy. I'm constantly doubting myself; have I done too much or too little? Less focus and feeling restless overall. A big part of why I train so much is to keep my head in check, which doesn't help during taper week. That said, I'm looking forward to the race and picking up training afterwards. Nervous and excited. Goal is sub 37. Training shows I'm in a good spot but it has to come together on race day.

@ChrisMasterjohn For every field, we should have a history of it required in grad school. I can’t tell you how much exercise science would benefit from a history of training. Same with many other fields.

The ability of science to go absolutely nowhere in 75 years is truly incredible. IG Spiesman showed in 1941 that vitamins A and D prevent colds when given together and do absolutely nothing to prevent colds when given alone. So what are we doing in 2025? Aggregating trial after trial showing vitamin D doesn’t prevent colds when given alone. People who make themselves slaves to the evidence base and subjugate themselves to the biases of the researchers who created that evidence base will point out that Spiesman’s trial was not as statistically robust as a modern trial and will argue we should ignore it and focus on modern meta-analyses. The critique is true. But Spiesman was not operating in a vacuum with his own random hypothesis. He was investigating why trial after trial had shown that cod liver oil, which has a balance of A and D, prevents colds, but A-rich D-poor halibut liver oil does not. This was in the midst of a massive campaign to optimize immunity against measles, mumps, chicken pox, and rubella by importing millions of pounds of cod liver oil per year while trying to make the American industrial work force solid as rock by preventing people from calling out sick with colds. The fact is that most science is not good because scientists pay too little attention to the histories of their own fields, work on incremental knowledge instead of big ideas, and chase grant money instead of trying to do the necessary public service of focusing on the most important things to know on the frontiers of what we have already discovered. Science marches ever forward, into an abyss of meaninglessness. If you want to not get sick, do what the Northern European peasants did for hundreds of years before clinical trials were invented and take some cod liver oil.

Does taking vitamin D make you less likely to get sick? This is the largest and most up-to-date dataset: 46 randomised trials with 65,000 people total, looking to see whether vitamin D supplementation (vs. placebo) prevents respiratory infections The answer? No effect:

@tim_roozendaal Well done Tim! That is a few minutes faster than my first 55 k on the shoes you advised me! I had no problems at al afterwards, however needed a week to get into training. Like somebody told me en route: you have a new problem. Now you know you can do it!

10k Time Trial DNF 🥴 I had a bib for a local race next Sunday but due to circumstance I couldn't make it. So I decided to run a 10k time trial to see where I am at right now. Didn't go to plan unfortunately. I think I over estimated my fitness and decided to go for sub 37 or bust. It is a pretty windy day today, 4 bft, which didn't help. First 3 km were into a headwind, and pace felt rough. I decided to hang back a bit and decided to push a little harder into the tail wind. But after 5k, the pace already started to slip. I came through in 18:44 and the 6th k was already in 3:50, 9 s off the pace. I've been dealing with a small niggle in my right knee for the last few days and decided to pull the plug at 6.3 to not spend another ~16 min in the red and risk further pain for a marginally PB, if I could ran a PB at all. Fitness is still pretty decent but it just didn't click today. Heartrate was pretty high in the beginning and my mental wasn't totally in the right place. I can spiral really easily, if my mental isn't really at the right place and then the first few k already feel heavy. It's definitely part of what happend today. Stopping was 50% quitting, 50% logical decision. This time trial concludes my norwegian singles approach, which worked wonders for my over fitness, but didn't really gave me the sharpness for racing. Will be back to the drawing board, and focus on races in 2026.

@stevemagness Steve, I'm a self coached amateur runner. You really succeed in cutting through the noise and help me filter on what does matter for me. The daily posts are nice nudges and the YT channel is a great resource to look up stuff! Also loved hard things, thanks for being here!!

I started this page for a simple reason: to cut through the noise. We are inundated with hacks, shortcuts, and superficial advice that simply doesn't work. My goal was to provide insight to help people live and perform better based on evidence, not hype. I wanted to create a positive, informative corner of the internet. No flash, no glam, just the stuff that actually helps. In an attention economy that pushes us to short and flashy, thanks for engaging with depth.

@jonhagedornmd Nice, working on your (perceived) weakness is always good! However, I would not take a Garmin metric as a goal because you might be tempted to play their (always limited) system. Instead, log your time on a nearby hill and test against that benchmark!

Main off season goal is to get this score above 80. VO2max has dropped post-marathon, but hills are my absolute weakness. On a mission to make my legs bulletproof. Heavy weights, more vert, more hill strides. 😤

@JohnGoldman This article is useful: you need to be able to blow some air through the fabric. turigrinos.com/2019/03/11/bre… There is no reason a cheaper jacket from a running store would not be able to do this, go there and check. Don't have recommendations because I'm a jacket snob.

@JohnGoldman The trick is you do not want it to be waterproof, just somewhat windproof. Amount of breathability is shown in 'CFM'. Options from outdoor brands I like: Black Diamond Alpine Start Patagonia Houdini Air Mountain Hardware Kor Airshell All pricy.

Runner and outdoor friends - Is there a wind breaker / rain coat that won’t make me feel like a wrestler trying to cut weight? Everything I’ve tried so far has me roasting in a personal steam room as I run. Humidity like the rain forest. What breathes the best?
