🧵 Part 1 of 2 — My Story
I’m 31 years old and buried under $98,492 in credit card debt.
Three years of alcohol abuse, cocaine addiction, losing a high-paying job, and trying to impress the wrong people destroyed my finances.
No one in my life knows.
This is the lowest point of my life.
This is also the most humiliating thing I’ve ever had to admit publicly.
From the outside people think I’m doing fine. My family believes I’m building a future, working hard, and moving forward in life.
In reality I feel like I’m drowning.
When I was 13 years old my family moved from a small town to a big city. From that moment on I always felt like I was trying to prove myself and earn respect from the people around me.
For most of my life I just wanted to be socially accepted and respected. I wanted people to see me as successful and someone who belonged.
When I was younger I worked extremely hard. I went to university while working two jobs, and some days I worked 12–18 hour days just trying to build a future for myself.
At one of my jobs I was promoted at a young age and for the first time in my life I felt like things were finally going in the right direction. I even bought a brand new car and thought life was starting to come together.
But over time things started to change.
Even when I was doing well financially, I still felt like I didn’t belong anywhere. I kept trying to impress people and feel socially accepted.
That led me down a path I never thought I would take.
I started going out more, buying rounds of drinks for people, partying, and trying to look successful and respected.
Eventually that turned into heavy drinking and cocaine use.
What started as partying slowly became abusing alcohol and cocaine, something I never imagined I would be doing in my life.
For three years my life revolved around partying, alcohol, and cocaine.
And the truth is, when you’re in that stage of life trying so hard to be accepted and respected, you don’t even fully realize what you’re doing to yourself.
You think you’re just having fun. You think you’re living life.
But you don’t realize how quickly everything around you is falling apart.
During those years I burned through my savings trying to maintain a lifestyle I thought would make people respect me.
When the savings ran out, I started relying on credit cards.
Then the company I worked for began layoffs and I lost my job.
I eventually found another job, but it pays less than half of what I used to make, and by then the financial damage had already been done.
Now I’m buried under almost $100,000 in debt and the interest alone is crushing me.
Last month I paid $1,717 in interest, and it feels impossible to catch up while also paying basic living expenses.
I’ve been constantly applying for higher paying jobs trying to improve my situation, but nothing has worked out and I feel completely stuck financially.
Out of desperation I even tried launching a Shopify brand hoping it might give me a way out.
After months of effort it completely failed.
0 sales.
0 profit.
Not a single order.
That moment broke me more than I expected because it felt like I had run out of options.
