Growing fast in the rest of Europe and Canada. Probably the closest team sport other than football to go truly global

That is a tiny percentage cent of of USA’s population but still higher than the entire population of Slovenia where Doncic is from (basketball is their second most popular sport after soccer)

US Soccer fans have been saying this for 20 years. The truth is that soccer will never be culturally dominant in the US because we only care once every 4 years. Athletic American boys are funneled into football, basketball, and baseball.

People are just enjoying themselves, following their favorite sport, supporting their national team and having fun in a foreign country. It’s a very special type of vacation which most will probably do only once in their live. It says nothing about relative living standards.

In 2007, the standards of living in the United States and Western Europe were similar, and most people don’t realize how much things have diverged since the US boomed after the global financial crisis and Europe didn’t. They don’t fully understand how we’re living and we don’t fully understand how they’re living; even when we visit Europe as tourists, we don’t see their tiny, sad flats and their depressing grocery stores. That is why Europeans visiting for the World Cup are going to, like, a Waffle House or a Taco Bell and losing their minds. Stuff we don’t even like or care about is wildly superior to everything everywhere else. We have no idea how rich we are.
