AEI’s @ConleyHeather1: We will continue to strike. They will continue to find leaders, and the lower they go, you have less seasoned leadership. You have young, inexperienced leaders, and that in itself is a challenge. Tragically, the conflict continues even though these strikes are continuing to cripple the regime’s leadership model.

NEW: The US-Israeli combined force continued to strike naval, military, and internal security sites across Iran on March 18 and 19. The IDF reported that it struck targets in northern Iran for the first time in the war. The combined force targeted the 4th Artesh Naval District Headquarters along the Caspian Sea coast in Gilan Province, northern Iran. The combined force also targeted an Iranian Mi-17 helicopter at the Sanandaj Airport in Kurdistan Province, the US-sanctioned Shiraz Electronics Industries in Fars Province, the Genu Mountain Missile Base in Hormozgan Province, and an unspecified Basij checkpoint in western Iran.

Today, @DaliborRohac hosted an incredible conference on Poland, northeastern Europe, and the transatlantic alliance. Below are some important insights: ➡️"If the US were to leave NATO, that would be the end of NATO and the end of European security." - @IanBrzezinski ➡️"If Russia wins, Putin would have defeated the West and defeated NATO." - @andrewmichta ➡️"The defense of a country is a responsibility, not a burden." - @ConleyHeather1

Don't sleep on the DPRK -- it is generating more revenue through its relationship with Russia, a rapprochement with the PRC and a its illicit activities. aei.org/articles/korea…

AEI’s @ConleyHeather1: I think this is a really big deal that the summit between President Trump and President Xi Jinping has been postponed, but I think it’s correct. The president needs to stay laser-focused on a conflict that’s spreading by the day.

MORE | Ali Larijani's death likely weakens a key faction in the intra-regime competition with the Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei-IRGC nexus but will not end the ongoing competition within the regime over its future trajectory. Larijani’s death is also unlikely to be the last casualty from among Iran’s top leaders as decapitation strikes continue. Each loss will alter the nature of the competition and the power of the various factions. Mojtaba will likely face several immediate challenges even after the war and after the decapitation strikes stop or slow, including establishing his legitimacy and attempting to unite and gain the support of various regime factions.

NEW | The United States and Israel are currently attempting to use force to prevent Iran from disrupting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. A weakened regime that remains in power after this war would be able to disrupt shipping whenever and for however long it pleases with little effort if its current, relatively limited, strike campaign on shipping proves sufficient to cause the US and Israel to surrender. A failure to demonstrate the will and ability to deny Iran the ability to disrupt traffic will make it enormously harder to deter Iran from future disruptions. Stopping the war in current conditions would thus represent a major strategic challenge that the United States or Israel would need to contend with in future rounds of conflict with a regime that will continue to be a committed adversary.

The postponement of the Xi-Trump summit meeting is good for Sanae Takaichi. Japan should keep the focus on China's hegemonic ambitions. But it will have to join in keeping energy flowing from Hormuz. ft.com/content/528ea9… via @ft

AEI's @KoriSchake just released a new book, Contending with American Exceptionalism, in partnership with IISS Adelphi Series. She argues that while the US truly is exceptional – politically, economically, and culturally - it faces a serious risk to power and international security in the coming years. The #GoldenDome cost figure Gen. Guetlein revealed today ($185B) is roughly in line with Architecture 1 in the paper I published last September.
