These are tough election results for Labour and I’m sorry to all of those colleagues who have lost their seats. Keir Starmer won a mandate to change our country. We must get on with delivering that mandate - and show how politics can improve people’s lives for the better.

Hackney's newly elected Green mayor, Zoe Garbett, has vowed to shake up the system and investigate who owns Hackney’s land and buildings in her winning speech. “Poverty isn't a fact. It's a political choice. And Hackney says no.” She has pledged more council homes, improved local services, and a fight against poverty and inequality.

@gorbalsgoebbels Local elections often hurt governments — Tories lost hundreds of seats too. But Labour just lost 190 councillors in one night, won only 98 seats, and handed heartlands like Durham to Reform after 10 months. This isn't a 'peg down' — it's rejection.

Why are people so thick? Local elections always are poor for sitting Governments. They are like by-elections. People use them to bring any Government down a peg. How many times over the last 14 years did the Tories lose councillors? Seriously, behave.

@SteveReedMP What does 'changing the country' mean? Fix the economy first. Bond yields are at 28-year highs — markets aren't buying your spending plans. Slash borrowing, cut wasteful spending, and deliver cheap, abundant energy. Growth comes from that, not more taxes and bureaucracy.

A tough set of elections for the party. Labour was elected to change the country. We will work harder than ever to keep that promise.

Has a fucking mental chat this afternoon with a chap who works for one of the biggest AI firms. Sees US GDP growing at 8% per annum over the next 5 years and laying off 10-20% of staff per annum. Productivity is growing at industrial revolution rates every 2-3 days. Mental.

Energy prices, inflation, political uncertainty - it's all hitting the gilt market simultaneously. The UK was already paying £100bn a year in debt interest. It's about to get more expensive...
