@thobbsjourno Yep - this might be a UK thing but MJ wasn't getting play around this time (although I can remember Jeremy Healy would play MJ in his sets and get flack for it). It turned around in 99/00 when people started playing Billie Jean again and it would go off.

@castleb0y no, it's totally fine. i kind of knew i might get a comment like this, and i didn't know j dilla, so i can't say it for certain, but given that his sampling inclination was heavily towards jazz and soul, i thought it likely, lol

@b_j_0_r_k There was an interview with the record store owner and he said around 2001-2003 Dilla was checking the rock section more than jazz. He was sampling Alan Parsons, Gentle Giant, etc so it makes sense that he checked out some Industrial records too. He also looked at the instruments

The montage is great, of course, but listen to that Hazlehurst theme - music concrete, Blaxploitation guitar riffs, strings lush enough for Michel Legrand. (The original TV version, has the spoken word element that also adds a kind of department store tannoy rap to the mix.)
