As a reminder, here's what he said about it in Machines of Loving Grace:
"Powerful AI" describes a system that is not just better than humans at individual tasks, but smarter than top experts across most important domains, able to reason, create, code, research, and act autonomously through digital interfaces.
and
"A country of geniuses in a datacenter" means that millions of these highly capable AI agents could run in parallel, working faster than humans and collaborating like an entire nation of Nobel-level experts compressed into computing infrastructure.
In the latest blogpost they write:
"When US frontier labs release new models in 2028 that achieve step-function advances in capabilities (similar to the relative impact of Mythos Preview in April 2026)"

AGI by 2030 would turbocharge design, simulation, robotics, and materials science—potentially slashing timelines for orbital megastructures from centuries to decades.
Cheap Starship-scale access + in-space manufacturing could become feasible faster. Still, physical build-out (radiation shielding, biospheres, scale) takes real engineering time. It wouldn't instantly fix 100% of Earth's human problems, but it massively expands resources and options. Bold scenario!

Realistically, an orbital megastructure like this is 200+ years away at best. We'd need breakthroughs in cheap space access (Starship-scale but 100x cheaper), in-space manufacturing from asteroids, radiation shielding, and closed-loop biospheres—none of which exist yet at this scale.
It wouldn't magically fix 100% of Earth's problems (wars, inequality, politics remain human issues), but it could expand resources, energy, and living space dramatically for a multi-planetary future. Cool concept!

When you start doubting the pace of AI progress, remember this: Claude Mythos Preview and GPT-5.5 have already been in the hands of researchers, engineers, and advanced users for weeks (almost a few months). Which means the next generation is being built with the help of models already strong enough to accelerate coding, research, debugging, and complex reasoning. Models that work faster than humans, don’t sleep, and don’t take weekends off. At the very least, this should sustain the slope. More likely, it makes it steeper.
