@robertgraham Thank you for this. Also, and I might be wrong, but we don’t even have a definition of what consciousness is which is part of his point.

Richard Dawkins is very smart, but the first thing people assume in response to his article is that he was stupid. Nope, he was smart. For example, he asks the question how evolution created this "consciousness". LLMs like Claude are very useful and smart, and so are humans. We can imagine how survival-of-the-fittest would select for "intelligence". But what evolutionary advantage does "consciousness" bring? (If you'll recall, Dawkins is the second most famous evolutionist after Darwin).
Thomas Basbøll@Inframethod

"It’s entirely possible that Claude is, in fact, having conscious experiences of some sort." No it isn't. It's not complicated. The "hard" problems of philosophy simply don't apply. We know how Claude generates its output. It's entirely impossible that consciousness is involved.

Just because they are fictional does not mean people don’t adhere to them. Harari uses the same argument for Money, Nations, Religions etc. All of them only exist in the shared imagination of a population (which in the modern world can apply to the whole globe ie globalism). His overarching argument is that humans are unique BECAUSE we can agree on things that are “fictions”. He literally says that we need fictions for society to function. PS. Treating others kindly is not a social construct. Animals of almost all kinds understand that it can be in everyone’s best interest to share resources and care for your peers.

@AS__2024 @RogueKite It is a psychopathic mindset. We all understand empathy is a social construct. We also understand that doesn’t devalue the value of a human life. We also understand the basic logic of doing unto others. Normal ppl learn these things as children, psychopaths don’t.

I broke up with a guy in college because when I was telling him about an audiobook on atheism i was reading he looked me dead in the eyes and said "if God doesn't exist then why wouldn't you just go around murdering people?" I consider this to be an equally serial killer-esque mindset. It is shocking how many people we hand microphones to who have no basic morality or human empathy. People who say these things should have no power, but instead we keep letting them replicate themselves inside our institutions.

@jo60824 @RogueKite I think what you just said is correct. His point is pretty simple. I’m just confused on people saying it’s a serial killer mindset or saying Harari is a Zionist demon (which he is so clearly not)

None of you understand what he is saying. “Human rights” are vastly different depending on location, culture, time period, or just the fact they have only barely existed for a few hundred years depending on how you would even define “rights”. Even today, human rights are broken and ignored in any given place in the world. They are fictions that only exist in the shared imagination of a population.

@FearedBuck Roles flipped it’s a crime , roles unflipped it isn’t. At least that’s what I’m getting from most comments. You have not right recording someone naked without their consent and putting it all over the internet. That’s two crimes. She claimed he did it on purpose, she could have

@freganmitts @DDDurango What??? Animism was a dominant belief among humans for tens of thousands of years!! It was common for people to see humans as just another part of nature, no more important than a wolf or a sunflower. Monotheism changed it so that animals are below humans.

Yglesias is correct. The current pervasive frameworks for thinking about these issues don’t allow us to articulate what most of us already know. That’s why THIS was one of the boldest moments in recent television history:

there is something in these photos that nobody is talking about. the earth, seen from the moon’s surface, is a crescent. the same shape we see the moon from earth. which means from where these astronauts stood, our entire world, every human being alive, every city, every ocean, every mountain, was receiving light the same way the moon does. dependent. reflective. not a source but a receiver. and God placed both of them, earth and moon, in a gravitational relationship so precise that if either one shifted slightly, the conditions for life dissolve completely. He did not just create them. He positioned them. He calibrated the distance. He calculated the tilt. He set the orbital speed. and then He rested. what that tells me about God is something i am still processing. He is not a God who creates carelessly and steps back. He is a God who creates with intention so deep that billions of years later, the greatest scientific mission of our generation goes out there and finds everything exactly where He left it. the craters on that moon are not evidence of chaos. they are evidence of endurance. of something built to absorb impact and remain. God put that quality into the moon because it is His own quality. He absorbs everything this world throws at existence and remains. unchanged. unshaken. still in orbit. still faithful. still holding everything He made in the dark.

Oxford professor John Lennox on testing the reality of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ: "Now, my final point is this. I'm a scientist of sorts, and people say to me, 'Come on. You can't believe this stuff.' Because in science and practical science you do experiments. You test your hypothesis. Christianity is not testable. Isn't it? Isn't it? You see, the difference between the two last things I read were the difference between seeing something, those grave cloths, and working out an intellectual conclusion that something utterly remarkable has happened. That's not quite the same thing as meeting the risen Jesus. And you see, ladies and gentlemen, if it is true that Jesus rose from the dead, then He's still alive, and it's possible to meet Him. Now, you can do an experiment, and it's this—this Jesus who claims to be risen tells us that if we're prepared to trust Him, repent of the mess we've made of our own lives, and the lives of other people, and we're prepared to receive Him as Lord and Controller of life as the risen Son of God, then He will give us forgiveness. Does the word forgiveness mean anything to you? He'll give us new life and a new power... Now, ladies and gentlemen, this is the test...When you see people with narcotic or alcohol dependence, and they've no food to put on the table in front of their children, and you meet them then a year later, and something has happened. You say, 'What's happened to you?' and they say something like, 'Well, I met Jesus,' or 'I became a Christian,' or they'll put it different ways. When you see that again and again, you add two and two to get four. I wouldn't sit here for a nanosecond if I didn't believe that not only is the resurrection of Jesus intellectually credible, but I believe it's existentially credible because the center part of my life and that of my wife and family is to walk with Him from day to day. Now, that may sound absolute jargon and mumbo-jumbo to you, but we're living in a universe where we discover that we are persons, and every analogy we know tells us that our origin cannot be sub-personal. It's supra-personal. And if we enjoy human friendship, what a magnificent thing it is if God makes a way where we can through faith in Christ become His sons and daughters and enjoy the biggest friendship and the most exciting friendship in the universe, and that is friendship with the risen Christ."

OH dear ... Why are there still apes ...? You really don't know? If your cousin has kids, you don’t disappear, you’re still part of the family! Same with apes: we didn’t come from chimps or gorillas, we share an ancestor with them, like branches on a tree.
