Many people know Markvart von Aulitz for his role in the video game KCD, and even only for his historical presence at the end of his life, which makes his life largely unknown to the public. Markvart von Aulitz, or in Czech Markvart II z Úlic (yes, correctly it would be Markvart II, as his grandfather had the same name), came from a minor aristocratic family in Úlice, East Bohemia, near the city of Pilsen. His father was Jan of Úlice, and he had a brother named Lvík. Lvik and Markvart of Ulice are both first mentioned in 1377 in the cos-by-other copyists of the Kladruby, probably as adults (the birth date is likely around 1360s). The most surprising thing, which I had already noticed years ago, is that the coat of arms of his Ulice family is that of the Lord of Rýzmberk, an important member of the League of Lords against King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia. This provides a huge clue about the fate of Markvart von Aulitz, who probably served this lord before. Indeed, as early as 1402, with the capture of Wenceslaus IV, Markvart joined the Hungarian King Sigismund alongside the League of Lords and, in particular, Lord Břeněk of Rýzmberk. He was appointed hetman and military governor of Prague as a reward for his loyalty to Sigismund, as were other lords such as Smil Flashka, who was appointed governor of Časlav. Everything changed in December 1402. Sigismund called for the mobilization of Czech lords to besiege Kuttenberg, a city loyal to Wenceslas IV. Markvart von Aulitz answered the call and mobilized a Prague army. He is documented on December 24, 1402, besieging the fortress of Suchdol, defended by Peter of Pisek, a fervent loyalist of Wenceslas IV. On December 27, 1402, a major assault on the fortress took place, ending in failure: Markvart von Aulitz was killed by an arrow to the throat. Despite his death, nothing changed, and Suchdol capitulated along with Kuttenberg in january 1403. Peter of Pisek is taken to Sigismund's camp where he is forced to beg for forgiveness for the resistance he made and the death of Markvart. He surrender his other fortress, Pirkenstein, besieged by the lord of Jemnist.
