SITUATION UPDATE: Moonshot is temporarily pausing new Kimi subscriptions after K3 demand pushed close to the limits of its current capacity over the past 48 hours. Existing subscribers are unaffected. Moonshot said it is adding capacity and will reopen new spots in batches.

Open sourcing the weights is marketing. It gets developers excited, builds hype, and gets the model into tools and benchmarks. That draws more people to their paid API, which is where they make money. Their revenue comes from people using the hosted version, not from the open weights. They already hit three hundred million dollars in annual recurring revenue from API demand. When they open source the weights, that's usually a one-time snapshot. Future improvements, bug fixes, new features, and retraining on fresh data? Those come through their hosted API first, and stay under their control. Users of the API get the latest and greatest without lifting a finger Hosting a open-weight model on your own is too much expensive . So they just choose the existing Kimi subscription or Hosted API from an official provider.

To protect the experience of existing subscribers, we're temporarily pausing new subscriptions and prioritizing compute for current members. Existing subscribed users are not affected. @dee_bosa @zerohedge It’s not open source Deidre, it’s open weight. Kimi doesn’t release the training data or code used to train the models, while previous versions did. If anything, China is becoming more restrictive.

The International Olympiads in math (IMO), chem (IChO), physics (IPhO) and bio (IBO) for 2026 just ended. The 7 usual suspects were at the top. China (19/19 golds), India, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Russia and the US. India specifically had one of its best performances of all time: 12 golds, 7 silvers. I analyzed all the past winners from these top countries since 2001 to figure out where they ended up: is brain drain really a thing? Here's what I found: – India has the most brain drain with only 28% staying in the country from 2001-2015 participants. It does seem the number is creeping up over time. – China is #2, although it's highly likely this number is inflated because of name collisions. I'm not sure I fully trust it, and some of these are really hard to tell. – Korea, Singapore, Vietnam are quite high too. For the first two, the number of people staying in their home country seems to rise at a faster rate. Vietnam is flat. – The fewest people seem to leave Russia of the lot, but the ones that do prefer Europe to the US. The crazy thing is really that more winners from these countries live in the US than all 6 home countries combined. While not without faults, that's the insane advantage of US high-skilled immigration.

It's hard for some American tech bros to comprehend, but maximizing total comp isn't the ultimate goal for everyone. Some people might care about contributing to their own country's prosperity. Some might not want to slave away for ZOG. Some might simply not enjoy living in America (especially after 4+ years in Pittsburgh, lol). Or maybe all of the above.

This tweet really misses the point. American visa policy is not the main reason why top Chinese STEM students move back to China. China is now an advanced country with enormous opportunities for elite STEM talent. These guys can write their own tickets in China after getting a Phd from a top U.S. program. Higher quality of life, same culture/language/food as what they grew up with. Another underrated reason. The U.S. does not revere scientific genius while China worships it. In China these guys have very high social status & prestige while in the U.S. they are treated like dorky Asian bros who get mocked at by mainstream society (especially girls). So why they hell would they stay here?

FYI that America’s moronic visa policy is almost certainly a factor in why Kimi/Moonshot is a Chinese startup and not an American one. The fact that we don’t staple a green card to every AI PhD completed in America is stupid. would be more logical to seize their passports and force them to stay

@WestsideLAGuy Yeah US immigration is only one factor and actually matters less these days for top level Chinese PhDs. People ignorent about China will never understand they are a vibrant VC market both private AND government funded in China and the quality of life is at least on par with US.

@RMantri I’m pro Indian in my other comments but settle down on the celebratory schtick - a massive problem with India is its domestic fracturing and risk intolerance. And China consistently is glazed for replication achievements that wind up being forgotten tomorrow (deepseek anyone?).

Do it. People still won’t stay. The world has changed. This idea, that you can “staple a green card” to every PhD and keep ramping up immigration is firstly unacceptable today to a huge number of Americans. Secondly, it requires the rest of the world to stagnate and stay technologically backward. That is no longer the case. The one-sided dominance of the US was enabled by talent flight from Europe after the two world wars, and by Asian leaders like Mao, Nehru and Indira Gandhi who drove away the prime human capital from China and India for decades by their misdeeds. That whole era was an aberration manufactured by historical circumstances. venturing.in/2013/01/challe… And that era is definitively over. Most Chinese people will want to live and work in China. Most Indians will also want to live and work in India. Other countries are raising their competitiveness and strength. There is nothing the US can do it about it. It’s good old mean reversion. The world you are talking about is history. Wake up and smell the coffee. And of course - stay a little grounded, don’t patronize others this way, keep your green cards to yourself. Certainly don’t suggest seizing somebody’s passport - that is what slave owners do.
