@SandyofCthulhu British food was great up until the 1930s and not that badly affected by the first World War. It was the second World War that consigned it to be entirely forgotten. I recommend Arabella Boxer's Book of English Food amazon.com/Arabella-Boxer…

Just thought I'd cheer up my British readers with an assessment of the economic outlook for @thetimes. Headline should read "History shows most *energy* shocks lead to recession," as it was true in the age of coal, too. thetimes.com/comment/column…

This is the 1994 briefing for PM John Major telling him that the Cabinet Office agreed that the UK would end all planning for Civil Defence given the end of the Cold War. Plans would be reactivated when needed - but "two years was suggested as a reasonable regeneration time".

"Trust me, I'm an architect" - five words that should make anyone with good taste and common sense sprint in the opposite direction. This entire thread shows why. Some doozies:

@UrbanCourtyard Call it what you want, but they are in fact imitating old buildings, which doesn't work along with functionality, materials and technology. Trust me, I'm an architect. It's popular among nostalgic and sentimental people without being full conscious about architecture.

Although Len Deighton is best known for his spy novels, he also had an outsize influence in the kitchen. Illustrated recipes that he published in London newspapers and collected into a pair of cookbooks are credited with helping British men get cooking. on.wsj.com/4sAirwa

The "Constanța Casino" in #Constanța 🇷🇴 is an iconic Art Nouveau landmark on the Black Sea promenade. Designed by Swiss-Romanian architect Daniel Renard (with later input from Petre Antonescu), its current structure was built 1903-1910 and inaugurated on August 1910 in the presence of the Romanian royal family. Originally planned with Romanian traditional influences, the design shifted to lavish Art Nouveau, featuring elegant curves, sea-inspired motifs, ornate interiors, terraces overlooking the harbor, and a Belle Époque style.
