We should've expected a record breaking late May heatwave as soon as we knew the first half of the month was going to be a bit cooler than normal... whole months below avg just don't happen these days and the swing to make up the difference is nearly always dramatic 😂

A big warmup coming up this week! Today temperatures are struggling to climb above 13-15C, but by the weekend southeast England could see the first 30C in May since 2005. Increasingly likely the heat will last into next week as well! #ukweather

If 30C is achieved in the UK this coming Saturday, it will be the earliest 30C since 1952. All metrics earlier than average in 2026 First 20C: 18th March (avg 5th April) First 25C: 8th April (avg 5th May) First 30C: 23rd May possibly (avg 30th June)

@SurreyPalmsWX Despite the warmth next week, May as a whole will be below average. Wouldnt it be ironic if the May max month record is beaten but the month as a whole is below average

There is growing possibility that the UK’s all-time May temperature record COULD be challenged next week. 🌡️ Latest GFS 12z has two consecutive days of 31C and 7 days of 26C+ for London with the heat peaking on Tuesday/Wednesday next week. 🥵 I wouldn’t rule out 32-33C now. 👀

Unsurprisingly, the Mean CET is below average up to the 17th (-0.7C below the 1961-1990 May average). However, the only way is up this week & likely temps will stay above average for the rest of the month. So probably be around average months end. Makes a change from well above months since January

25-28c seems like a realistic target area right now across a fairly large area. Regardless it’s a massive shift to 10-13C!

Strange when feeling current coolness and how massively different it could be in near future. Model output hinting at relatively intense Spanish plume scenario which entertains 30C temps later next week. Solutions like this from ECMWF are not isolated this evening - currently I put it at 20% chance.

@TakeThatClouds @TheSnowDreamer Yes but that is just natural variation due to jet stream. The average highest max for whatever 30 year cycle you look at in the 20th century is 30C or above

@TheSnowDreamer Yeah it’s ridiculous. People losing the plot because it’s 12C in the second week of May. A 1960s style summer would freak them out. Imagine a summer that never even reached 28C once these days!

My impression many of you have an inflated sense of what a British spring should be like. Today’s dynamic weather is not crazy really this is springlike, many weeks at time without rain is not normal. Recency bias is obvious. Yes recent weather is rather unseasonable for mid May, it would be more appropriate in April, nearly all of spring until now though has been behaving 1 month ahead. Some small balance…

A look at the warmest max temperature in month of May each year from 1949 to 2025 at London Heathrow. May 1953 holds highest monthly max of 31.7C (89F) this 73 year old record is oldest of all months with +2.5C of warming since then. Then followed by June 1976 (34.8C). Definitely overdue!

A minimum of 1ºC this morning was the coldest May night in 5 years here in Reading (6th May 2021, -0.1ºC) and the fourth coldest 4th of May on record since records began in 1908. It would not surprise me if tonight's minimum was a little colder, last May air frost was in 2020.

April 2026 was another much warmer than average month in London finishing +1.8C above 1991-2020 normal. The month ranks as 5th warmest April back to 1948, right now we are on course to see the third consecutive notably "warm" spring unless May changes course.

Preliminary but 4.6mm at #London Heathrow will make April 2026 the tied 3rd driest April on record. In approaching 80-year record we see that 4 of the top 5 driest Aprils have occurred since 2007. #climate

A final figure of 26.6°C at Kew Gardens beats the previous date record of 24.4°C at Brixton in 1894 by 2.2°C. This is an idea of how it looks in the historical record since 1875 - a very notable spike.
