The risk they pose extends to the environment in which their children are being raised. Nisreen played an active role in assisting Ameen’s efforts to recruit new adherents to ISIS. History has shown that extremist ideology is often transmitted within families, normalising violence and intolerance from an early age. The recent attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, carried out by a father and son, is a reminder that radicalisation can span generations. There is no credible reason to assume that Nisreen and Ameen would raise their children differently, free from hatred toward other Muslims and people of different faiths, given their ideological commitments. The gov has a responsibility to intervene.
