@andrewsharp Solid list. My suggestion: instead of eliminating intentional fouling completely, you only allow it once Also, make overtime a target score (first to score 10?)

I've been suffering from Lyme disease. I'm stepping back from xAI into an informal advisory role so I can go founder mode on my health, starting today. --- The symptoms started when I got sick (cold, flu, or COVID -- I'm not sure which) in early 2025. I distinctly felt less energetic, less creative, and less agentic even weeks after "recovery." After that, my condition ebbed and flowed, but the lows kept getting lower. Accidentally eating the wrong thing would make me extremely tired, taking days to recover. Working out would leave my whole body feeble for days. There was a week where I slept 12 hours a day and still couldn't recover. Lyme is famously hard to diagnose, but luckily I have an incredible doctor. He suspected these symptoms, far from being just in my head, indicated immune issues. Detective work over a few rounds of testing revealed I have Lyme disease. I was very surprised because Lyme is said to come from tick bites (where the bump looks like a target), but I don't ever remember having one. Likely I contracted Lyme a long time ago, but until I pushed myself hard building xAI and weakened my immune system, the symptoms weren't noticeable. --- Overall, I actually feel lucky to have discovered this early. Lyme is a serious disease that only gets harder to treat with age -- patients discovering it in their 50s or 60s have a much tougher time. Lyme can also be debilitating, leaving its victims bedridden, but luckily I'm still functional and can take care of myself day to day. So while some folks have said "you shouldn't have pushed yourself so hard," I'm glad I did. I found this issue early, and now I can fix it so I can push myself even harder when I rebound. --- Chronic Lyme is not well understood in the literature or by the public. For folks suffering from it, it can be a lonely fight. But I hope my story can make it just a little less lonely.

We asked @andrewrsorkin about the risk of the Fed losing its independence & lessons learned from the 1929 crash: "You often have to do things that are super politically unpopular, like bailouts, for example...That is the right thing to do." "But if you are under the thumb politically, therefore you decide not to do that because it's politically unpopular, you could really have a problem and that's why the independence piece matters. " (w/ @AdmaniExplains)

The Fed has no option: Even as inflation hits 3%, the Fed MUST cut rates to "save" US consumers. Consumers are struggling while large cap tech stocks are soaring. More rate CUTS are coming into one of the hottest stock markets in history. Own assets or be left behind.

Btw, there’s a $10M/year business for every vertical • Gen AI PPT tips for consultants • Gen AI website design tips for agencies • Gen AI branding design tips for tech startups All the way down. The entire creative stack is being reengineered and no one knows how to use it.
Kallaway@kanekallaway

There's a $10M/year business for someone to do long-form tutorials with the gen AI tools on YouTube. Real use cases, click for click tutorials, explained normally. I'm not talking about podcasts where people pontificate on the updates and cover news, I'm talking about a creative practitioner with taste that live builds. Kind of what @rileybrown does, but focused exclusively on creative gen AI tools (e.g., here's how to design a sick website with this specific AI tool). Sounds too obvious to not be saturated already, but this space is completely open. Everyone I know that makes short-form AI videos (me included), is either way too busy to take this on, or doesn't have the creative juice/taste to come up with novel ideas every couple days. There's a market gap here and the companies are willing to pay boggling money for it.

@MJAMIV @businessbarista wow this is a laughably easy question. Really surprised to see GPT-5.1 get it wrong Im going to start testing these models with more civil / structural engineering problems

It’s still cannot solve the simplest question on the Professional Structural Engineering license exam. GPT-5-Pro solved it in 6 minutes. There’s literally no reason a GPT-5.1 can solve this out of the box without Pro and it can’t even solve it with GPT-5.1-thinking… I believe the biggest limitation here is the figure and GPT-5.1 inability to see things clearly. The below simple problem is a bit of a Turing testing for engineering because it’s such a simple problem that even a non-engineer could probably figure out with some thinking. Only GPT-5-Pro solved it….meaning they are holding back way more than you think they are opening up with 5.1

GPT 5.1 is way bigger than people think imho. No this wasn’t a model shift like 3.0 to 3.5, but I’d argue we’re at a level of intelligence now, where things like personality, adaptive thinking, and custom instructions will have a more profound impact on the average user than major model improvements. Here’s how I think about it: Let’s say I’m talking to my best friend from college and my great uncle who I never see. My best friend’s IQ is 110, my great uncle’s is 125. They both work in finance. Let’s say I asked them both to explain how financial statements work. The purpose of a balance sheet, statement of cash flows, and income statement. And how they tie together. Given their level of intellect, they both have the capacity to understand this topic deeply. So then whose explanation will resonate more deeply with me? It will be the person who I feel more connected to. The person who speaks to me in a way that holds my attention. The person who understands what I require to really grok a concept. The difference between my best friend and my great uncle is precisely what OAI rolled out today. Connection = custom personality Resonance = custom instructions Attention = adaptive thinking Tl;dr I think this update will do more for retention/usage than many people think.
Sam Altman@sama

GPT-5.1 is out! It's a nice upgrade. I particularly like the improvements in instruction following, and the adaptive thinking. The intelligence and style improvements are good too.

Explored Dallas today for potential move. What that city did to their downtown should be outlawed nation wide. I have never seen a more desolate, boring, and pathetic downtown of a major US city in my life. Now uptown on the other hand, that’s a good start.
