@ericallen2020 @forallcurious HiRise is in a 200 mile orbit around Mars and built to take images of Mars' surface. Considering it's orbiting at 7600mph, the image of the nucleus is very impressive considering HiRISE's intended purpose. Ignoring all of that, the image itself is not impressive imo

Those “new” images are an absolute embarrassment for a $25 billion agency. The HiRISE “highlight” is a low-contrast, heavily processed composite that looks like it was run through a 2012 Instagram filter. The nucleus is still an unresolved smudge. The jets are faint streaks you can barely make out even when they zoom in and draw arrows. China’s Tianwen-1 GIF from two weeks ago is literally sharper and shows more structure than NASA’s “best” Mars shot. Even amateur astronomers with 14–20 inch backyard scopes (Satoru Murata, François Kugel, etc.) dropped cleaner jet photos over the weekend. They spent 30 minutes patting themselves on the back for “coordinated multi-mission observations” and then served up what looks like 240p YouTube thumbnails. If the goal was to kill speculation, they failed — they just poured gasoline on the “they’re hiding the good frames” fire.

A quick trip through the thermosphere turns newly-discovered asteroid ST25J47 from an Apollo to an Aten. It is no bigger than a meter.

An #asteroid passed just 300 km above Antarctica earlier today. It was not discovered until hours after close approach.

In the last 6 days, 9 asteroids passed inside the Moon’s orbit. Estimated sizes: ~1–38 m. All were discovered this month, a reminder that countless small, faint NEOs slip by unnoticed until they make a close pass.

New from orbit! We captured this image of the Chinese Space Station using a @BlackSky_Inc satellite. This NEI mission was captured from a distance of 83 km, with a resolution of 0.17 m/px. Can you identify the various modules of the space station? Photo: BlackSky

Very warm conditions coming Sunday-Tuesday, peaking Monday. These temperatures are normal for July, but 10-20 degrees above normal for March. Elevated risk for heat illness. Stay hydrated neighbors. Check in on older folks. #cawx #laheat

The impact probability of asteroid 2024 YR4 has dropped from 2.8% to 0.16%. Thanks to new observations, Earth is now at the edge of our shrinking ‘uncertainty window.’ If this trend continues, the risk may soon reach 0%.

Observations made on Feb. 19 – 20 of asteroid 2024 YR4 have further decreased its chance of Earth impact on Dec. 22, 2032, to 0.28%. NASA’s planetary defense teams will continue to monitor the asteroid to improve predictions of its trajectory. More: go.nasa.gov/3I0ZA7K

A biggish asteroid may hit Earth just before Christmas in 7 years. We'll know soon, when @NASAWebb tracks it next month. Then we'd need to decide how best to deflect it. My full interview: youtu.be/1_2eStLZZos @LBC
