Prevalence of MGUS is ~4%, meaning ~3 million cases in the UK alone. Even if screening offers a small survival benefit, the health economic impact is enormous. These cases aren't just treated and resolved - require yrs of f/u. The evidence of benefit must be exceptionally strong

@ManniMD1 @VPrasadMDMPH Agree, however it's a non-zero sum game. The pots of money available to researchers and to homeless support charities providing proven interventions are unlikely to overlap.

I have to agree with @VPrasadMDMPH here. Of all the interventions we can offer to people experiencing homelessness, doing a CT scan for lung cancer screening (a controversial, arguably low value intervention) should be very low on the priority list. 😢 drvinayprasad.com/p/ct-screening…

A new blood test is being developed @unibirmingham to help diagnose a form of incurable blood cancer, myeloma. @traceychan_1 says these could be relatively low cost and may also be done at a patient's local GP surgery. bloodcancer.org.uk/news/new-blood…

@andrewgregory Could you make it clear that only 5% or so of people with non-small cell lung cancer would be eligible for lorlatinib? Also, there are already NICE-approved treatments (ceritinib, alectinib, brigatinib) given instead of crizotinib because they've given better results in trials.

This may just show my ignorance, but how are we still finding core disease have highly prevalent autoantibodies?! Amazing!

About 95% of patients with penicillin allergies are actually not allergic to it. Being given alternative antibiotics is harmful: higher incidence of wound infection and multi resistant bacterial infections. So it’s not necessarily better for our patient with an unconvincing allergy history to avoid the first line antibiotic (“my mum told me I was, I fell off my bike after taking penicillin…”) #anaesthesia2024

The fact that our ancestors made babies with neanderthals is fascinating. This wasn't rare and occurred over a 6-7k yrs. There must have been families & communities of both species. It seems multiculturalism is wholly natural & not just a modern concept. science.org/content/articl…
