One of the most archaic rituals attested across Europe and the Near East is that of the bifurcated bitch: a female dog sacrificed and split in two, through whose severed body the army would pass before battle. This act, far from being merely symbolic, constituted a sacral transformation, binding warriors by blood and oath to their sovereign and collective cause. The earliest documentation of this rite appears in Hittite ritual texts from second-millennium BCE Anatolia, where the bitch functioned as a liminal figure mediating between the human and the supernatural. The crossing of her divided body marked entry into a consecrated military state. This tradition did not vanish with the Hittites. It reappears among the ancient Macedonians, whose ritual culture preserved Anatolian elements within a deeper Balkan substratum: the purification of the Macedonian army. Yet it is in Albanian culture that the rite finds its only living echo, preserved not in custom, but in language. The Albanian word bushtra (“bitch”) appears mundane, but reveals a ritual etymology: be (imperative or oath-form) + ushtria (“army”) - Be + Ushtria (Oath Army) Thus, bushtra encodes the notion of a military oath taken through a sacral passage, a linguistic fossil of a forgotten rite. Attempts to reduce bushtra to Latin bestia ignore both chronology and cultural context. Latin offers no explanatory framework for the association between the bitch, the army, and the oath, connections which Albanian preserves with remarkable semantic precision. In sum, bushtra is not merely a lexical relic, but a symbol of cultural continuity, linking the Hittite ritual sphere, the Macedonian military cult, and the Albanian linguistic memory that alone retains the sacred logic of the ancient rite. #albania #history #rituals #besa #ancientmacedonia

La sociedad griega era profundamente patriarcal y las mujeres carecían prácticamente de derechos. Non-Greeks (ξένοι) might not understand, but learning the Homeric epics is mandatory in 🇬🇷 elementary schools. It doesn’t seem like a big deal then. But unconsciously, the myth is carved into the child’s soul. That’s why as adults we consider these epics as sacred as the Bible.

Ja się nie znam na tradycji wojskowej ale husaria nie była formacją gwardyjską ani ceremonialną. To się nawet estetycznie nie spina, szczególnie pieszo.
