The Sick Opposition in a Dying Democracy
Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and a leading contender for the 2027 presidential election, has dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and pitched his tent with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), one of Nigeria’s newer registered political parties.
This development raises several critical questions:
- How politically and ideologically stable is Mr. Obi?
- Who benefits from the destabilisation of the opposition coalition?
- Can Peter Obi (PO) single-handedly dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which many view as incompetent yet desperate to retain power?
- Was this move a wise strategic decision?
- Why does the “Obidient” movement consistently avoid building its own party from the ground up, instead relying on platforms painstakingly built by others?
- Is Mr. Obi avoiding a competitive primary election — a fundamental bedrock of democracy worldwide?
- Is Peter Obi inadvertently (or deliberately) working in favour of President Bola Tinubu?
- With this division, has the 2027 election already been conquered by the ruling party?
The answers are not far-fetched when one examines recent political history.
As someone privileged to have been on the ballot in the 2023 elections, I see clear parallels.
The ongoing disintegration of the ADC coalition appears to be a calculated move that ultimately advantages the APC.
Mr. Obi, in my view, has played into the hands of President Tinubu. One might even say he has become Tinubu’s “destiny helper,” sent by Allah.
What a wasted opportunity to free Nigerians from continued oppression.
I will remain in the ADC and FIGHT! FIGHT!! FIGHT!!!
