Wow! Like most people, I always had this impression that being a VC is something you do after 20-30 years in an industry . You build a name, make money, and then move into venture, but this gave a very different and real picture of what it actually takes and how hard it is. The sales part especially threw me off. Never really thought of that as the core skill for a VC. In my head, it was always founders pitching and you deciding whether to invest or not, which, yeah, sounds quite naive now. Glad I read this. I wrote a letter answering this question 15 years ago. I would send it out when people inquired.
